I was on the brink of Type 2 diabetes and started working out and watching my diet closely about four months ago. As my blood sugar has improved and I've gotten healthier I began exercising more intensely and as a result I needed more protein in my daily diet. I actually found these at the local Wally World and thought I would try one. Looking at the nutrition information I was a little put off initially by the calories (380 in the peanut butter one) and the amount of sodium, which seemed high to me. But, I figured as a meal replacement I considered this not too bad if they were filling.
Yes they are. 30 grams of whey protein is a nice boost for someone who needs more protein in their diet. I love the taste of the peanut butter ones. I have tried the others but the peanut butter one is the best tasting and most satisfying to me.
From what I have read on other websites and reviews for energy bars (again, I consider this a meal REPLACEMENT not just a SNACK) I would NOT recommend this to someone who is looking to lose weight by simply eating less. This product, in my opinion, is for those who have been exercising for a while and watching their diet- eating more than one of these a day would probably wreck you if you were just starting out. I typically have one mid morning after a breakfast smoothie and then have a light lunch- that carries me over well into the afternoon when I usually work out.
I ordered the peanut butter ones in bulk and they arrived quickly. Surprise! It's North Carolina in August and they arrived melted. So rather than immediately take to the Internet to complain I put them in the refrigerator to firm up. Worked like a champ.
Overall, I recommend these for their value, taste and satisfaction.
The less that's said about birthday cake the better. It was VILE. I seriously could not eat half of one bar. I spit my second bite into the trash, chucked the rest of the bar, and put out the box out for free at work. And I didn't even put them out next to the coworkers I like. I took them to the jerks on the second floor. I feel like maybe this was unfair. In retrospect I wouldn't wish the cloying yet somehow bitter, metallic, weirdly effervescent sugar alcohol flavor on even my workplace enemies.
I give 5 stars on the strength of the PB bar alone. AVOID THE BIRTHDAY CAKE FLAVOR.
I would definitely recommend these. I don't really work out; but working the 2-10 shift, we get hungry right around the end of shift every day. Although I wouldn't want to eat one of these everyday; having one every few days makes a decent end of shift snack, where I hopefully won't go home and chow down like normal.
Also; the cookie bar in the middle has a soft/thick consistency, so don't expect some sort of "cookie crunch" or anything. But overall, I enjoyed this one. I hear he's making a caramel and nut version; which is right up my alley. I'll have to try them when they come out.
As others have mentioned and I will echo the point; these are best used as meal replacement bars OR for those who are already on a very well structured diet where you know how many calories you're ingesting throughout the day. If you have a sweet tooth and still have some candy bars for your "cheat" day, these also wouldn't be a bad replacement considering half a bar would still give you 15g of whey protein to help with your daily requirements.
I won't say these are the "best" protein bars I've ever had cause that includes many factors to consider. But they are the best tasting ones I've ever had; even beating out the sugar laden Gatorade Whey Protein Recover Bars, Peanut Butter Chocolate, 2.8 ounce bars (12 Count).
Pro tip: buy in bulk with it's available because the Peanut Butter flavor in particular seems to go weeks without being in stock.
