From the Editor

When I think of the end of WWII, what immediately comes to my mind are those iconic images of V-E Day with ecstatic crowds flooding the streets and headlines proudly proclaiming victory. Yes, it was a time of immense relief and joy, but what I tend to forget is that it was also a time of massive chaos and confusion. Europe lay in shambles with villages destroyed, roads bombed out, and countless people displaced, forced to find their way home with little or no aid.

It’s against this backdrop that Gemma Liviero sets a powerful story of survival in The Road Beyond Ruin. Her unforgettable characters are mired in the aftermath of war, each trying to move forward by burying their pasts. Suspicion runs high. Strangers are looked upon as a threat, and neighbor no longer trusts neighbor. It’s no wonder that many of those making their way home choose to hide their identities.

After reading The Road Beyond Ruin, I can no longer overlook how treacherous those days, weeks, and months were—especially in Germany, where the brutalities of war forced people to make impossible choices. Regardless of the official date recorded in history books, I now more fully understand that the war certainly didn’t end when the fighting stopped.

Product description

Product Description

For some people in post–World War II Germany, the battle is not over.

August 1945. As Stefano, an Italian POW, heads toward home across war-ravaged Germany, he encounters a young child beside his dead mother. Unable to leave him to an unknown fate, Stefano takes the boy with him, finding refuge in a seemingly abandoned house in a secluded woodland.

But the house is far from vacant. Stefano wakes at the arrival of its owner, Erich, a former German soldier, who invites the travelers to stay until they can find safe passage home. Stefano cautiously agrees, intrigued by the disarming German, his reclusive neighbor Rosalind, and her traumatized husband, Georg. Stefano is also drawn to Monique, the girl in a photograph on Rosalind’s wall, who went missing during the war.

But when he discovers letters written by Monique, a darker truth emerges. This place of refuge could be one of reckoning, and the secrets of the past might prevent the travelers from ever getting home.
