The story picks up with Meg running the toy shop, and still wanting to be apart of the Amusementists. Craziness and nonstop action ensue. Almost immediately out of the gate, Meg is threatened by a bomb. While this one is longer than the previous novel, it flies by, and I honestly wish it was longer just so I wouldn't be done with Meg's story already. Meg is an amazing lead character. She fights with all that she has, and stays strong, even in the face of danger. She doesn't back down from a challenge, and will do anything to protect those she loves. I greatly enjoyed Meg's time at the Academy. There are many new characters introduced in this story, all men, and let me tell you, they are awful and despicable, and I couldn't stand a single one of them. However, that's exactly how Ms. Bailey intended it! So don't worry, this isn't a bad thing. I started off liking Peter, but after something happens and he turns his back on her, I couldn't bring myself to like him again, even when he "makes up" with her. Oliver and Will were definitely the bright spots in regards to the men in this story. Will shall always have my heart, and while there isn't really a love triangle, I can see the potential for one. And let me tell you, it is no competition in who Meg will pick. She belongs with Will, and I hope it doesn't turn out any other way.
With just the right amount of steampunk, Ms. Bailey has crafted a unique and wonderful story that is one of my favorite steampunk series. This novel is full of sabotage and intrigue, and try as you might to figure out who is behind everything, you'll be surprised in the end. I still have some questions, and I hope that they are answered in the next in the series. Ms. Bailey has an amazing imagination to come up with all of the machines that are created, and even more so for the entire world that she has built. Her writing is flawless, and this could easily be read by any age group. I can't wait to see what Ms. Bailey comes up with next! I highly recommend checking this book out, you won't be disappointed. Happy reading :)
