I really enjoyed this book, Rie Warren has written a story that is full of sexual tension and desire. The plot was great and the characters hot.

Liam, a former cage fighter, working his way through the heavy weight boxing ranks, he has always known he is gay but is forced to suppress who he really is due to fear of acceptance in his sport. Liam has desired his trainer Michael for a long time but he is happily in love with his long time partner.

'In the Ring' follows Liam's POV as he struggles with who he is, who he loves and how to make it all fit together to reach his HEA.

ROROBLUSMUM - no retreat, no surrender

A decent read - slowed down a little unnecessarily in the middle, followed by a bit of a hissy fit, followed by a good ending.

This is a well-written tale that had excellent build-up, (thankfully!) wasn't too heavy on the fighting stuff, which sank a little in the middle once the leads got together, but then ended in what I felt was the leads' HEA.

It's a tale that's more than a simple MM romance with sex, as we get told about Liam's life before he became famous and started to earn serious money, telling us how hardship and the lack of a decent fatherly role-model drove him to work hard and achieve his dreams, and how he still felt responsible for his family. I liked him, felt as if I got to know him, what drove him, what made him tick, what his values were and what he wanted out of life. And, his reading glasses and his undying love of books (and gaming), made him sweeter still.

This is Liam's tale, as though Michael is the co-lead, the tale is told in Liam's voice, from his POV and Michael doesn't quite get the same page-time and we don't get to know all that much about him, other than what lead him to where he was now, and about his relationship. I thought him a decent guy, though, although conflicted because of his relationship with his longtime lover, and his growing love and feelings for Liam, which were so evident in Michael's caring of him, nurturing of him, training him and being there for him before, during and after the fights.

Liam wasn't out, and Michael was, but I liked that the whole, 'I can't be a gay, out fighter' wasn't done too heavily and that it wasn't the be-all/end-all of the tale, as Liam wanted to be himself, admitted what he was to himself and didn't deny himself, though he always had to think about appearances and possibly being outed, and that he couldn't have Michael, who was in a relationship. Like I said, the build-up to the leads getting together was great and I turned page after page, totally immersed in the tale.

Once the guys admitted their feelings and Liam outed himself, and once Michael showed his jealousy (nicely done, not having his cake and eating it), the guys' relationship changed and this is where the book lost a little. Liam had been loving and wanting Michael for so long, and Michael had been the same, without knowing that Liam was gay or wanted him back, and yet they took things slow. Like S....L.....O....W. I couldn't quite see or feel how that could/would work, as both had suddenly been given what they thought they'd never have, and still it was ages before they got physical. They were two young gay guys at their peak, and all they seemingly wanted was to cuddle and make out a little, when really, there were not obstacles standing in their way. Confusing, slowed the tale down and didn't ring true.

Then, Michael suddenly had a hissy fit about Liam not being willing to come out publicly...for him. Yes, the 'for him' was a big thing that spoiled the tale a bit for me, as Liam's decision to out himself or not should have been his, and if anything, something that they'd need to discuss, not that Michael should demand. Michael didn't show the patience or understanding that I or Liam needed, and he came across as a bit girly, a bit sulky, a bit 'teenage girl' and yes, he flounced off. I didn't hate him, but his actions made him...less in my eyes, hurt Liam, but then made Liam stronger when he thought he'd lost Michael forever and threw himself into his training.

It does end with the leads at the start of their HEA. I am unsure if book 2 will be about more of their lives together, as their HEA seemed a dead cert at the end of the tale, or about other leads. If the latter, then I don't think we've met them yet, unless the author takes the (not such a) 'baddie' of this tale and gives him his own tale (I felt a bit sorry for the guy).

I'd read more, but this could have been a 5* read had the tale not lost pace and a bit of alpha credibility toward the middle-end of the tale.

And Michael. Dear God. I’d like to sign up for his daily rubdowns. Just sayin’.

I’m fully behind a Sean book. And I’m championing for one for Anya too. She’s quite the character on her own and I think she’d be a KICKIN' heroine for Ms. Warren to share her story.

I have been a fan of Rie Warren's books since I first read anything by her. She writes with so much grit, heart, passion, and downright hawtness that each book is a roller coaster. In The Ring didn't disappoint me at all.
Liam and Michael's story is one of a battle for acceptance, for love and honor. Liam struggle with his attraction to Michael, and his efforts to hide who he truly is brought me to tears. I actually cheered out loud when Liam's family professed their acceptance. And the instant Liam owned his truth, I may have cried some tears of relief.
Once I reached the end of the story, I felt as if I was missing some good friends. The writing is tight, emotional and evocative. The supporting characters bring so much to the story (going on record her that I didn't like Devlin or Wade at all). I'd call this book a major triumph for love.

In an effort of full disclosure...I love Rie Warren's writing and was offered this book for review, but I turned it down, because I am not a big fan of boxing-themed romances. But then I saw that the author had it priced for $.99 and I grabbed it just because I really do like her male/male romances. I figured for a dollar, I wasn't out much if it didn't capture my attention. In fact, I was so sure I wasn't going to enjoy it, I started it one night...late...planning to only read a chapter or two just to get a feel for whether I'd like it or not. A few hours later, I'd read the whole book. *sigh* Yep, this is one of those books. I don't care that it was about a boxer...omg, the story was excellent!!

This book is told entirely from Liam's point of view. Liam has had to hide his true self his entire life. A gay boxer just isn't something that he can be, but having the hands of his trainer, Michael, on him after so many years and wanting and abstinence is wearing on him. Between that and the growing pressure that's building up to the Heavyweight Championship, something has to give. But he can't be gay...AND Michael has a serious boyfriend. My heart hurt for Liam.

Okay, flat-out...this book is TOTALLY worth losing sleep over. I loved it so very much. It was a great story with a fantastic slow-burn happening between the two MC's. Liam is stuck. He's a fighter. He's worked his way up the hard way and is doing everything he can to do better for himself and his family. From his point of view, he has no choices here...not if he wants to keep his career. The alternative is to go back and live in the slums of Cincinnati. He won't do that.

Also...I'm not a boxing fan, but even those parts worked for me. I loved watching Liam train and Michael helping him to get into top form. Boxing is a brutal career and the author did a great job of showing that aspect, too, without hitting those buttons in my psyche that turn me off to this trope in romance.

So...yes, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It's easily been one of my favorite reads for m/m this year...and surprisingly enough, I'm looking for more in this series. More boxers? Bring it! I can't wait.
