Mr. Haynes must be learning to sail as this novel takes a different tack from his usual books. Instead of space and future cops, he offers us an aroma of steampunk, unusual phantasm inventions, and some very likeable new characters living in Olde London. Introducing Septimus Jones, a likeable timid protagonist, Roberta Twickham, a strong willed young lady and Professor Twickham a truly absent-minded professor with a strong penchant for restorative brandy. Oh, and they all have secrets.
Ask yourself, ‘what could go right’?
Things heat up pretty quickly as ghosts, demons, and a murderous antagonist run rife through the streets of London and the pages of the book seeking an ultimate end to our world. New to London, Septimus is young, bookish, shy, and an altogether charming milquetoast kinda guy. Caught up in a young man’s romantic fancies, Mr. Jones is immediately immersed in death, ghosts, and blackmail and he does a fine job of wishing he was a simple accountant yet bewilderingly trodding through his tentative future and the storyline.
Written in a 19th Century style, it’s easy to get caught up in the lives of our heroes and villains, and you will not be disappointed in the ending. Bravo! Mr. Haynes.
