WARNING: **Not recommended for readers under the age of 18 due to graphic violence, sex and strong language. Trigger warning for self harm.

The only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

A beautiful wife.
A son.
A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit ‘safe’, ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I'm cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise—to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I’m no longer Nick Ryder. I’m a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose—one who's seen the dark and violent truth behind the city’s flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn’t know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I’ve kidnapped his beautiful wife.

An eye for an eye—isn’t that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn’t destroy me first.

The cover of Ricochet has been playing on my mind for awhile. See, I saw this cover and was spellbound. At first, I was consumed with wanting. Then I heard some talk, and I hesitated. For starters, people were talking about the darkness, the violence and the fact that the heroine is kidnapped and the hero was her captor. But…I was still consumed with the cover. How could that man on the cover be violent and a kidnapper? Would I want to become attached to a bad man? Then, it got worse. I heard that the man was a shell. His life had been taken from him when he lost his family. Oh geez. I’m now supposed to see him find a new love. No, I can’t do it. This will be too hard. I’m not strong enough to handle the pain. I shelved my desire to read Ricochet and left it sitting on my wish list on Amazon. I’d see it sitting there and ask myself if I was ready…until one day, I bit the bullet. Now, even though it was sitting on my kindle, I still couldn’t bring myself to read it. I’d look at the cover and think, soon…ish. Lo and behold, the wonderful Lana, from Dirty Girl Romance, was holding a competition for Backfire #2 in the series and I thought to myself, if I win Backfire, I’ll know it’s time to read Ricochet. Guess what I won…and my journey behind the cover began.

Ricochet is a story that sucked me in from the very first page. I was bracing myself for the violence and abuse knowing that it could get quite ugly. In my previous reading experiences, I’ve found that I’m somewhat able to blank out violence, death and destruction. I get a little upset, but I’m kind of able to compartmentalise it. What I didn’t really brace for was how close to home this story hit. I’ve been where Nick has been. No, I didn’t take a bullet to the head, but I did have a head trauma after a car accident.

WOW! What an amazing book to read. Not only for the story line that was created but also for the brilliance of the writing throughout Ricochet. This was my first book by Keri Lake and I can honestly say I was blown away. Not only did I find her words moving and poetic I also found them philosophical at times. The knowledge and out look that Lake brought to the characters voice, especially Aubree was pure genius and spoke straight to my heart. I’m pretty sure the entire book is highlighted of just the inner voices of both Nick and Aubree.

Nick, good grief! My heart and soul bleed for what he went through. I wanted to hold him close and never let him hurt ever again. His story line was on of the most gut ranching I’ve read in a while. He was absouletly the best alpha male I could think of. He had the dark grittiness about him that I find I also want to read about but not only that but he is such a good man underneath I truly want him to be happy and I am so glad he found Aurbee.

Now, Aubree, can I just say she is one of the strongest heroines I’ve read to date. One girl I would love to be BFF with. Her spirit and fight for not only her life but also Nicks was inspiring. To see them both heal together and confront their fears and pain was not only the most heart-breaking but beautiful moment throughout but was what had me sobbing like a baby. The ending had me crying happy tears for them both, I just knew that what happened towards the end wasn’t actually the end of their story.

In saying that though, the Twist Lake put in there regarding Nick was ah-maze-ing!!! Once that was revealed I was like OF FREAKING COURSE!!! Such a good plot twist it was amazing. Had me racking my brain going through pretty much the whole book again thinking ‘Yes! I can see that now’.

4.5 stars--RICOCHET is a contemporary, adult, standalone, dark romance from author Keri Lake focusing on revenge and retribution. This is former computer game designer Nick Ryder, and abuse counselor Aubree Culling’s storyline. The storyline is set in the dark and seedy underbelly of Detroit’s criminal element and the political elite who believe themself above the law.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Aubree and Nick) as well as several third person perspectives RICOCHET follows Nick Ryder as he seeks revenge for the murder of his wife and son, and the horrific nightmare that has been left in its’ place. Three years earlier Nick walked into a brutal massacre, of which, his beautiful wife and son did not survive. With Nick left for dead, the killers set the house ablaze and walked away without a second glance. What ensues is a dark, gritty and graphically violent plan to take down everyone responsible including the people calling the shots. Enter Aubree Culling-Mayor Michael Culling’s wife, and the perfect target to start Nick’s vendetta.

Aubree Culling is the mayor’s wife, and therefore, guilty by association. As Nick sets his sights on destroying Mayor Culling, Aubree will be abducted and held hostage while Nick sets his plan into motion. But Aubree has a secret, one that Nick will soon discover, pushing our anti-hero to avenge the woman with whom he is falling in love. There is a slight ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ or ‘Capture Bonding’ feel to the storyline wherein our heroine will fall for the man holding her hostage.

RICOCHET is a graphically violent storyline about a man obsessed with vengeance against those that destroyed his life.
