I bought Revision because the basic premise was so intriguing - a young woman discovers that editing her boyfriend’s company’s news website can change events in the real world . I’m a writer and a storyteller - I make my living from the power of words - so the idea that the characters could literally shape reality with their choice of words really drew me in.
Phillips handled her ideas deftly, slowly awakening us to the moral and practical repercussions of being at the mercy of a website editor. There were a few concepts that I initially wished that she had developed more thoroughly but once I thought more about what kept me reading, I realized that she had given just the right amount of information.
For me, after a chapter or so, this book became less about the plot and more about how Phillips was developing the main character. Lots of books are written in the first person, but very few of them limit us to what that person actually knows. Usually we get newspaper articles or overheard conversations or something of that sort that gives us information and lets us see patterns that the main character can’t see.
In this case, though, the author keeps us to Mira’s frame of reference. We can’t always tell who is telling the truth, what facts are important, or what Mira should do next. She comes across as a fairly immature person who, except for a rebellion against her parents, mostly drifts along through life. In the hands of another writer, that might become annoying, but Phillips makes Mira real, she puts us right in Mira’s head, so we can empathize with her confusion and her frustrations. We don’t become exasperated with her immaturity, instead it becomes kind of endearing as we wait for her to rise to the occasion when she is needed.
I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with Mira, figuring out her world as she did. The plot was interesting and well executed but my real enjoyment was in how the author immersed us in Mira’s point of view. I look forward to reading more of Phillips’ work.
