3.0 out of 5 stars Needs some mental rewriting. 11 February 2013

Ever watch a movie or read a book and one thing drives you so crazy you have to rewrite it in your head? then you can go back to enjoying the story with the new ending firmly in mind? That's what I had to do with this book, and I'll explain why.
The characters are great, their interreaction is great, the growth and emotions that need to be overcome also great. The problem? They're vampires, they're also elite soldiers amongst their race. And they're afraid and threatened by an altered human who's stronger than any normal human but still about as weak as a youngling. This strange weakness in them isn't my imagination they voice it - repeatedly! The vampire leader even forbids anyone to go out feeding because of this 'unnaturally strong yet weaker than any of them' hunter. What??? It drives me up the wall! Make the hunter a real challenge if they're supposed to be such amazing fighters and so much stronger! Why why why specifically keep telling us he's weak but then have him threaten them all?
Also if she's a super soldier above the elite, why do they have military training and she has none? What makes a law keeper above the elite then? Quick fix - mental rewrite.
How did I mentally rewrite it so I could still love the characters and not get so annoyed? I did what the writer should have done, and should feel free to adjust this rewrite into the story for free just cuz there was so much potential in this book. In my brain the hunter was much stronger and the battle much more intense. And while she might not have military training because the author describes her as such, in my brain law keepers go through some kind of special training that makes them faster or stronger than normal vamps, hence above the elite. Somekind of voluntary starvation while training that lets the inner beast rise to the surface during that training. Why did I put all that in there? Because it made the book make sense. Now the only thing I couldn't mentally rewrite is why no one bothered to give the lead any decent medical assistance besides his ex flame. Mentally rewritten as he's poisoned from the holy water and cross so only she is strong enough to heal him. Done! Now keep these spoilers but necessary adjustments in mind as you read and the book will be 5 stars - quick paced with great characters and now a believable plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good at all 27 December 2012

I haven't read this author before, and after this book, I am unlikely to be reading anything else of theirs anytime soon.

Marise was not a character I could relate to - nor did I want to. Jascha showed promise for a paragraph of two, but quickly left me tepid if not cool.

Frankly, I found the story tedious to read, and that's being polite. The characters' world was seriously messed up. My disbelief was never suspended, and try as I might, I really couldn't whip up any interest in the outcome of this story. There was no character arc - no significant growth in the main characters; just an apology for a past sin of omission and all's forgiven.

Sorry, but the impression this story left on me was of someone making an almighty effort to come up with some kick-ass female warrior who could lord it over every male in sight without putting herself to any effort. The result was a female I couldn't care less about, and a pathetic male who read like a labrador puppy looking for someplace warm to curl up.
5.0 out of 5 stars Vampire Love And Action in One 26 March 2013

Marise is a law-keeping Vampire who is forced to investigate her Lords attack. One of the guards mortally wounded during the attack is the man that broke her heart 50 years ago, Jascha. Although 50 years have passed her heart is still broken and she struggles with her feeling of betrayal and love. There is one scene I must admit was as hot as it got when sex is not involved. Basically Marise is cleaning and healing Jascha's wounds, and although from the severity of the wounds he is unable to talk, I was becoming quite flustered and considered it as close to a love scene with no loving as you can get.

They are also tracking down the vampire hunter that attacked the Lord in their bloodline to discover that he is part human morphed with something stronger. I would read the book if I were you to discover the outcome

I so loved the novella as it sure fit a lot of story in such a short time. Not only was there a love story but also a great action packed storyline to go along with it. Kudos to the author for being able to write such an amazing detailed filled story in such a short book. For the details I would recommend anyway interested in the Vampire genre (or not) to purchase this novella as you will not regret it

Although this is part of a series, which I am yet to read but will, book 6 can be read as a standalone
4.0 out of 5 stars Not your average vamp story 24 August 2012

Heaton is one of my must read authors. I really enjoy her work, and I love this series, Vampires Realm, of books. However, this was not my favorite. It's worth the read, it just wouldn't be my first pick. I would still recommend the book though to anyone looking for a good vamp read that doesn't follow the same tired theme of the majority of vampire books these days.
Marise is a vampire, a Law Keeper for her bloodline, the Venia bloodline. She also hasn't been home in 50 years due to her love at the time having cheated on her with his maker, but now she's been called home to investigate the attack on her Lord of the bloodline. Her former lover, Jascha, is there and is the head guard for the Lord. When her Lord was attacked, two guards were killed and one was gravely wounded. That guard, of course, was Jascha. As a Law Keeper, Marise is not supposed to show emotion, but that becomes increasingly harder as she sees Jascha's injuries and tends to him and spends time with him during her investigation.
The writing is well done. The character growth is good. However, I wasn't as found of this female character as I have been with other female characters of Heaton's. I like that she's a strong, independent female that can take care of herself rather than the overdone damsel in distress. But, she just had personality flaws that annoyed me like she's supposed to have had a relationship with this man, but lied to him the entire time and upon the falling out incident still didn't come clean. I just had a hard time swallowing that. Her lack of interest in learning to speak even basic Russian sort of bugged me too. It seemed to make her sound bubbly, which she is not presented to be. I also found a bit of confusion in the genetically altered human vampire slayer villain character. There seemed to be something missing with this part of the story line.
However, overall, I did enjoy the book, and was left wanting to read more of this series. Like I said, if you're looking for a fairly short, but not too short vampire romance with a twist, then give this one a try. It's not your typical vampire romance story where the vamps are lonely heroes who are just misunderstood by the world or that overplayed damsel in distress saved by the oh so mysterious man. It's darker with the vamps not being all wonderful heroes and heroines but not being all bad either. They're more relatable than many vamps of other books I think. It's a fast, fun read that kept me interested to the end.
