I told myself I wouldn't support these prices for PS5 games, but after seeing some videos/reviews for returnal I caved in and bought it and I don't regret paying full price at all. This game is awesome in every way. Graphics/performance and sound design are top notch and the haptic feedback and sound from the dualsense controller add a lot to the overall experience. Be aware that it is quite challenging and starting from scratch every time you die might be off-putting at first but you will get over it and start to learn the tactics to get a bit further each time.

I am a huge fan of the Souls games so I am used to tough, unforgiving games. However, I was unfamiliar with roguelike games, so this took a bit of getting used to. The lack of a save feature, losing mostly everything on dying, having to restart at the beginning every time; this may not be for everyone.

And yet, the gameplay is amazing, it is visually amazing and the procedural game world mixes it up enough to keep it interesting over repeated runs. An utterly immersive experience. I am hooked.

This game is stunning, and makes amazing use of the haptic controller. FYI - when you die in this game, and you will a lot, you lose just about everything on death, including your guns. And unlike a Souls game which this is being compared to, you don’t get the opportunity to recollect them from where you die. The world procedurally changes upon death and you gotta collect everything again from scratch. There’s also barely any checkpoints, so again upon death, you’re starting from the very beginning. It’s a fun game, but not for those who are time-poor, as you’ll have to sink a lot of hours into this and repeat the same levels over and over and over again..

Been hooked on this game for weeks. I have the physical version, and every time I think of taking the disc out, I'm like "nahh…one more run". With the new "suspend the cycle" feature, you can finally pause the game mid run. Switch to another game, turn off your console, what have you. And jump right back to where you were last. I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

Let's talk difficulty. This game is challenging, but it is not unfair. What you quickly need to get is that it is all about risk vs rewards. Pay attention, read the tips and press "Options" to watch the video tutorials. And learn to adapt, building a kit as you go through your run. Lastly, the "weapon traits" you unlock are permanent, so having 3 or 4 'go to' guns that you focus on the first few times will make your life a little easier.

Please, play this game.

---

I just can't resist adding some tips and tricks for beginners, hopefully it helps a few make the most of the experience.

1- "Options" for video tutorials. The in-game tips are good, but the video tutorials are great. Take the time to view them.
2- "R1" for dash. By default, R1 is unused and 'circle' is used for dashing. Now, I have beat the game all the way through this way, but many people recommend switching to R1. If you're going to do this, Do it do it before starting the game, as it is all about muscle memory. It's too late for me.
3- Doors. Blue rectangular doors are your main path (there are often more than one). Indigo Triangular doors are optional rooms (risk vs reward). Gold (star) doors are your 'challenge rooms' and they are crushingly difficult (risk vs reward). Later, Blue doors with a circle above them will lead to gates that can take you to other biomes, so you don't have to repeat the entirety of biome 1 to get to biome 2 for example.
4- Metroid in nature. Many areas are inaccessible at the beginning. Avoid falling. Avoid water. Avoid red tentacle lava thing. You will unlock upgrades as you progress.
5- Parasites. Parasites always offer a buff and a debuff. Never pick up the one which says "suffer damage when you pick up items". Never pick that up.
6- Guns & Adrenaline. I like these guns. You'll like these guns. Experiment with these guns, then decide that the "Hollowseeker" is the best all around gun. It's the decision I made, as you will. Then Adrenaline. Simply put, don't get hit. The more you kill without getting hit, the easier the game becomes up until adrenaline level 5. You may not think it makes much of a difference, but trust me, you'll love seeing that 5.0 at the bottom of your screen.
7- Patterns. Enemies in Returnal have easy to read, mostly obvious tells. The game is never unfair and there isn't a single attack you can't avoid. Skilled players could quite easily beat the entire game without ever being hit once, and it wouldn't even be that hard (compared to say Hollowknight). Learn the patterns and you will learn the game.
8- Obolites. Your first instinct in returnal will be to hang back and fight from a distance (especially as you use your hollowseeker), but even in this there is risk vs reward. Because when enemies die, they drop obolites (money) and these things disappear in 4 seconds or less. So you really want to be close to pick up these obolites, and you can't do that when you're dozens of meters away. So, be fluid. Move in and out and take out enemies at close or medium range, as you can manage. It's not worth dying for Obolites, but not having a lot will make it harder to survive.
9- Dash. You are invincible the entire time you are dashing except for certain late game enemies. Dash.
10- Offensiveness. The bosses in Returnal are easier than many of the minibosses before them. Every boss in returnal is a 1 on 1 fair fight. Many mini bosses spawn in a room with minions. Kill the minions before the mini boss spawns. You should almost never play this game defensively. Kill enemies before they kill you.

Enjoy.

The game is beautiful and takes full advantage of the new PS5 power. the only downfall of the game to me is that it’s highly difficult for the casual gamer as when you die, you have to start from the beginning of the game for there are no save points. If this sounds perfect for you, buy it.

To be honest, I didn't think I would like this game so much. I got it because I wanted a proper ps5 game, and I was actually blown away. I put a pair of headphones on (not the sonys) and plugged them into controller. So cool to know where enemies are coming from! The thing moves like lightning, and even though I have just made it through the first biome - I haven't felt cheated. I take my time, check out all the cool scenery and shoot and run (mostly away). I suck at dark souls, but Returnal never makes you relieve the same piece of story twice. Even though you die, you still progress.

Great game, very entertaining and had hours of fun getting the platinum trophy. It’s hard at the start but once it clicks the game becomes so much easier and you can easily get through the entire game in one run. Make sure you gave a decent headset or surround sound system in place and thus game is next level. A must have for any true gamer.

I loved my play through of Returnal and it was my Game of the Year for 2021.
The game plays great and takes advantage of PS5 feature.
It looks and sounds fantastic, especially with the 3d audio.
I respect the developers for bringing us their vision and providing a unique, challenging experience.
