I was sucked into this story from the first line of the prologue. So much so that I quickly realised this author is an expert in dangling the carrot! She certainly fooled me because I expected something totally different. A good read needs a solid storyline, and Retrace not only offered what I was looking for, but it also promised a brilliant ending. I was not in the least bit disappointed.

Two lost souls, Nia and Reeves, rule in this book full of emotions! Hurt and guilt; emotions totally out of their control, consume them. However, destiny plays a trump card when an inopportune circumstance throws them together. What I enjoyed most in this book was their humour. It abounds in such a well written story that the author made me cry with laughter; she made me cry while living their pain, too.

Loss is a difficult thing to overcome and both Reeves and Nia have their own way of coping with it. Honesty is held back. Why? Because they aren’t ready to open up their hearts to each other. But when these two beautiful people do, they have to learn to trust. And this is basically what Retrace is about. Trust and acceptance. Going back to the basics and coming to terms with what had happened is the root. And certainly not of all evils because they are made for each other.

Nia is where she is because she wants to move on. Teaching dance away from home to youngsters is what she loves; is her way of escaping her unfounded guilt. After Reeves and Nia’s chance meeting, he will see her in action. Not only is he literally spellbound by her enrapturing movements, but you will also be left with your mouth open. Yeah! There are hot, sexy scenes which will have you grabbing for you fan. At least I did!

Reeves. G.I. Joe! Nooooo, no, no! This man is much more.

Retrace was my first experience reading a novel by Sigal Ehrlich and Ohhhh Myyyyy Goooodness what a fabulously written and amazingly structured read. I now have another favourite author to add to my growing list. Retrace was intriguing, mysterious and had me crying with compassion for Nia and Reeves.

Nia Mitchell is a twenty three year old that has endured a harrowing past already for someone so young. She moved across the globe to escape her painful memories and to make something for herself in a new country. A fresh start and a new beginning.

Reeves Mitchell is biding his time, taking each day as it comes until revenge can be handed out for the life of his friend. Every day and night Reeves cannot forget that fateful day and it will be forever etched into his heart. His best friend, Ben meant the world to him and now, Reeves has placed a wall so thick and strong around his heart that nobody will be able to penetrate it.

Reeves works at Jakes, a bar in between his real job; Jake is a mate but also organises his assignments. Reeves is known as a playboy and uses the woman to release his frustration. He’s currently living in a hotel room, waiting for his apartment to be finished in a couple of days.

Nia feels free when she dances, it’s the only thing that lets her forget the trauma of her past. Now in America she has the chance to live her dream, she has acquired a job teaching young girls to dance.

Returning to her room, Nia is exhausted and ready to hit the shower and unwind. Opening the door to exit the bathroom, Nia runs into Reeves. Reeves is stunned when a beautiful naked body is standing in front of him as he was heading to take a shower. Nia starts screaming at him and he just stares, unable to look away from the exquisiteness.

Once again Ms. Ehrlich delivered the high caliber story that I have come to expect from her [see Layers and Inner Core]. She engaged the audience with a well-written tale which included a great plot and cast of characters.

[Both Nia and Reeves are starting over in a new town and waiting for their permanent housing to be ready.] Nia and Reeves share the same last name of Mitchell so it is understandable that the hotel booked them into the same room. Imagine Nia's surprise when she walks out of the shower wearing a towel and sees Reeves inside her hotel room. Reeves is immediately besotted at the physical attributes of the mysterious Ms. Mitchell. Nia is utterly embarrassed, wants to crawl into a large hole and all the while drinking him in with her gaze.

Nia and Reeves keep bumping into each other and figure out that they are actually neighbors. Reeves isn't willing to ignore the instant chemistry he feels for Nia and he sets out to learn about her and what caused the sadness he sees lingering in her eyes. Mia sees that underneath it all, Reeves too, is suffering from a loss of his own and is holding on by a thread.

Together they slake the desires of the flesh and find the strength to make it through another night in one another's arms. They fall into friendship and slowly progress to a real relationship. It isn't all roses; they will have to find a way to work through their baggage and avoid people (Katie) trying to break them up while they both work on finding the courage to open their hearts to one another. BTW I will never look at my favorite board-game the same way....

You might be asking yourself why Ms. Ehrlich choose Retrace for the title. I have alluded to the fact that both Nia and Reeves are recovering from a tragic loss in their life. In both cases, they feel like they should have been able to prevent the death and feel some measure of guilt that they are still alive. If you have ever lost someone close to you, you understand this feeling. After losing someone very close to you, you wonder - almost obsess - over how things would be if you had done something differently. Ms. Ehrlich captured this feeling perfectly.

My closing thoughts: It is a very talented author who can tackle the subject matter Sigal did, weave a love story in and include heart-warming moments. The richness of the characters personalities and dialogue is one of Sigal's many strengths - it is so easy to see certain characters living on in their own books [Carmie & Jake; Alex; Hunter]. The story of Retrace flowed very smoothly and it was such a pleasure to read. Retrace will always have a home on my bookshelf.

I loved the story line. Nia and Reeves both had some serious issues with themselves before meeting one another. They accidentally end up in the same hotel room while waiting on their apartments to be ready. Funny how these 2 wounded souls end up in same building. They keep fighting the feelings they have for one another I believe it's because they don't think they deserve to be happy. While deep inside they both know that they are calm in a storm for each other. I was so happy when they finally committed to each other. Katie was just a selfish, rude girl who needed to grow up. But we all know how girls/women can be when they want something. I think the only thing lacking in this book was when Nia finally went home to get family. There could have been more story there. Overall I thought this was a great book. Can't wait to read more from this author.

This story was a good mixture of sexy, sweet and emotional that would definitely tug at your heartstrings. From the moment Reeves and Nia meet you can tell they have an instant connection but they deny this attraction keeping it purely friendship until this all changes into something more. I love when characters are tortured souls that seek solace in each other, it strengthens their story for me as I will them to be together. As well as the emotional there is also a lot of funny parts, smutty scrabble anyone? If you are after a book that is a mixture of romance/emotion and scenes that make you smile, then I’d certainly recommend this book.
