Product Description

As we move past overshoot in the use of natural resources, humanity is faced with two questions? The first being, do we continue down the ‘business as usual’ road, or do we rethink our current paradigm and change our trajectory? One way will lead to certain collapse. The other will give us a better chance of mitigating catastrophic disruptions, lead us to greater connection and the ability to rebuild communities and ecosystems, and deliver real prosperity to all.

Rethink …Your World, Your Future, explores one of least understood challenges modern society will face over the coming years. Resource depletion, more specifically the onset of peak oil will have profound implications for modern society, economies and the environment. To understand why there is limited understanding and discussion around this important issue it is crucial to understand how humans make poor decisions based on biased thought processes. Hence, the first section of Rethink explores these biases which are distorting our view of reality and holding us back from real progress. Our biases and errors of thinking have clouded our judgement and left most people blissfully unaware or in denial of one of the greatest challenges facing Western civilisation.

Along with these biases, modern society has been manipulated into believing, acting and participating in an unsustainable model of living. A growth based system has had devastating consequences on ecosystems, society and the biosphere. Rethink explores how corporations, governments and interest groups use propaganda to manipulate, coerce and influence individuals. Part two of the book examines how propaganda is used to ensure citizens comply with certain ideologies, beliefs and initiatives thus ensuring the status quo. To understand what the future may look like we must set aside our biases and recognise how dependent modern civilisation is on crude oil.

The third section of Rethink introduces and explores the concept of resource depletion, with a focus on peak oil. This section examines key concepts which help in being able to understand how important crude oil is in our everyday lives. Only by understanding the importance inexpensive oil has played in shaping modern society can we begin to redesign and mitigate the effects of declining liquid fuels. The resource depletion story is crucial to understand as it may well be the trigger which shapes economies and how society functions over the coming decades.

Only by addressing our biased thinking and understanding the interconnectedness of our current system can we move forward, and initiate practical, affordable and sustainable solutions. Recognising the potential threats and challenges allows us to make better decisions based on true reality. Rethink explores many of the current trends, initiatives and opportunities which are and will increasingly have the potential to transform modern society. These trends have the potential to open up a realm of possibilities, moving us toward a world which is more connected, healthier and offers a holistic way of life and thinking.
