I didn't expect for there to be a tenth book to the series, but I am very glad that there is. I think it has quite a different vibe to the previous few books and it's lacking a few old favourites (like Tanith or Scapegrace), but I did enjoy Resurrection. Whilst the plot isn't that great, maybe on par with Dark Days or one of the earliest books, it's made up for by a much more mature consideration of Skulduggery and Valkyrie.

"Skulduggery, you're my best friend and I love you"

Valkyrie Cain is an older, broken woman. After the events of Dying of the Light with Gant, she moves back to Ireland to live in Gordan's house with her dog, Xena. She's wracked with guilt for what has happened to her younger sister, Alice, and barely leaves the house. She avoids Roarhaven because of her association with Darquesse, murderer of mages. Valkyrie Cain lived for years with prophecies and worlds on her young shoulders and now she just wants to be left alone. I can't much blame her. Meanwhile, Skulduggery is futilely trying to pretend that nothing is wrong, that a good case will take them back five years to when they were the dream duo, saving the world left and right.

Valkyrie broke my heart. When I was younger, I wanted to be her, and so I fell into the same trap that Valkyrie Cain did: wanting to be someone, a hero, but saving the world is not fun, it breaks you. We are the same age in Resurrection which makes it even easier to understand her. There's this lovely quote right at the start of her POV:

"The years, they had thundered by, heavy and unstoppable, a boulder rolling downhill. Bruises and broken bones and bloody knuckles and screams and laughs and tears. A lot of tears. Too many tears"

Sounds a bit depressing, doesn't it? Never fear, Resurrection manages to balance this rather depressing, but realistic, outlook on Valkyrie and Skulduggery with good, Landy humour. The plot is entirely new, with new characters, rather than trying to rehash old characters and storylines. Roarhaven has grown, under the guiding hand of China Sorrows, into a full mage city complete with school for children. Attending this school is Omen Darkly, younger brother to Auger Darkly who is prophesied to have a courageous heart and to fight the King of the Darklands in a battle to decide the fate of humanity. He's recruited by Skulduggery to have a nosey into some strange goings on at the Academy; Omen is interesting, he's nice and pleasant in his own right but also serves as a reflection of Valkyrie when Skulduggery recruited her.

"You should have seen her, back in the good old days. She sparked. She was fearless."

"No," she said, 'I wasn't."

"You were fearless in every way that mattered," he responded. "You were magnificent. You were funny, and tough, and confident, and amazing. You did things no one else could do. You survived what no one else could survive. Just being around you made me a better person. And now look at what you've become"

The writing is, I think, the highlight of this book. It's so beautiful and thoughtful. There's so many amazing quotes that I want to share: funny ones, philosophical ones, sad ones. The best ones are, I think, about Skulduggery and Valkyrie's relationship. They aren't in love, obviously, but they love each other in a way that develops from shared burdens and suffering:

"Fight them. I'm begging you."

"I thought you didn't beg."

"You're my exception," she said. "You always were."

Essentially, Skulduggery Pleasant: Resurrection is a great addition to the series. It isn't as intense and wide-spanning as The Dying of the Light, not having as many links and connections to the other books, but it is fun, clever, and very enjoyable with some new additions to the cast and a great look at how some of the characters have aged.

I was a little disappointed in Valkeryie's characterisation in this storyline but the action held the tale together. Assume there will be a continuation as so many plot lines are left open. Saying that, still couldn't stop reading but more for the hope that it got better as it went along.
If I didn't love the characters so much maybe I wouldn't have carried on...

THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW. However, there will be my favourite quotes from Ressurrection (I saw another reviewer do this and thought it was a good idea ;D)

Wow. I picked up Skulduggery with low expectations and watched as they sped to high two pages in. I wasnt let down. Now, ten books later, I'm still hooked and wanting no.11! I'm sure this goes for all the Skeleton Detectives fans…

"'I'm afraid this is a bit more urgent.' He said.
'How urgent?'
'Me-driving-through-your-gate-right-now urgent.' "

Valkyrie Cain just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Now a broken, suicidal and self-hating 24 year old woman, all she wants is to be alone with her dog and her awful thoughts. But of course, thats not going to happen! When Skulduggery's friend goes missing, supposedly captured by an anti-sanctuary, she gets dragged back to Roarhaven...

"Auger Darkly. He's the Chosen One. I'm OMEN Darkly. I'm only his brother."

Omen Darkly is second best to his very popular brother, Auger. He's used to being nobody. But its not every day that a skeleton shows up and asks you to help with his latest mission. What can he say? It's the first and only chance Omen has at being somebody. So while he's snooping around looking for a recruiter for the Anti-Sanctuary at Corrival Academy, the Anti Sanctuary have gained the biggest possible advantage....

" 'All in favour, say AYE!'
'Aye!' said Razzia.
'Thank you' said Pleasant.
'No problem. What were we talking about? I wasnt listening.'"

A war against mortals seems inevitable. The Anti Sanctuary, with mind controlling Smoke and unbeatable Lethe, are intent on resurrecting the mass murderer Princess of the Darklands, Abyssinia. That is NOT good. At all.

Omen and Never (his friend) have never done anything like this before. It's scary. It's brilliant. But will they make it out alive? Valkyrie and Skulduggery are back together again, but,looking at Skulduggery- can you keep a dead WOMAN in her grave? Not likely.

" 'What if one of them is a sketch artist? What if he shows the drawing to Jenan and he goes: Yeah, I know that guy, hes an idiot, but he has a cute friend. Lets kill them both!' "

One point I noticed is this- in book nine, Skulduggery dies. yeah. But here, he's back. And Im glad, only- HOW IS HE STILL HERE???? If you know, please dont judge me. I probably missed a detail.

I really loved this book! You won't regret it one bit if you buy it! Landy has taken on a much more mature narrative, but the old wisecracks and plot twists are still there. It's for all ages and it's beautiful!

I've always loved these books and this installment will not dissapoint. Another thrilling book filled with twists and turns, trauma and sacrifice. Mr. Landy has a way of moving the reader constantly between motions while ensuring your never bored. Often I find that book blurbs and titles don't live up to the books but not here. For fans of thrillers and actions this is a definite must. This book seems to captivate the audience to belive you are there, watching the drama unfold in Ireland.

Always loved skulduggery and couldn't wait to read this book, but it was just not up to standard compared to the others. It was really slow moving and from start to finish, it just seemed like not a lot happened.

But if you have read Skulduggery up to this point then obviously you gotta read this...

Just hope it doesn't end on this note.
