Mattie and her dogs save the ship when traitors plant explosives and also help in dealing with Tai Tek.
Mattie is part of the circus and when they go to the stars she goes too as there is nothing on earth to keep her there. Her parents don’t care about her and her ex boyfriend was a cheater.
Jai was a nice change of pace, still manly and strong but no one special. He was just a normal serving soldier of Kassis and came from a farming family.

the fact that i preceded to spend the amount of money i spent on to buy all of her books, should tell you what i think of her/his writing. i just wish i had them all to read again for the first time. :)
I loved this short story. Jai is typically alpha male and Mattie, while gentle and insecure, does show some fire. I just wished the author had given more time to flesh out this story and show in more detail how the relationship between Jai and Mattie develop; some decisions were not explained...just skirted over briefly. However, I was pleased that S.E. Smith decided to use an African American woman as her heroine.
I just wanted more and the story finished too quickly for me.
Another delightful read from S E Smith.
