Built my own frame using 1' aluminum tubing along with an adjustable aluminum mounting bracket (like you use for outdoor flags) and it goes with me wherever I go.
Works like a champ and the envy of everyone who sees the set up.
- Renogy Solar Panel Mounting Z Bracket Mount
- WindyNation 10 Gauge 10 AWG One Pair 20 Feet Black + 20 Feet Red Solar Panel Extension Cable Wire MC4 Connector
-Renogy 16Ft 10AWG Wire Copper Tray Cable one pair, Connect Charge Controller and Battery
Instead of drilling the brackets into the roof, I attached them to some 1" square aluminum stock, and then used Sikaflex-252 to "glue" the aluminum to the roof. Held up 1000+ miles.
There was not alot of prep time so I purchased the starter kit so I would have everything I needed to get up an running. I recieved it the day before the trip so it was packed up in the truck with all the other gear.
A couple days after I arrived I opened it up. It was well organized but the panel had some strange smears on it and the caulking job looked like a novice did it. Did I recieve a factory second? I was still excited to get to work. One major item I needed however was not included - instuctions...zero nada zilch! Ugh...here I am in the middle of nowhere with no data trying to figure it out. I am typing this review on a cell phone at a local McDonalds so please pardon the typos hehe.
I took the battery cables which had the ends precut but they were a bit overzealous as some of the very thin wires were snipped. (In fact all the cables had this problem.) I hooked up the cables to the 12v battery & placed the wing nuts on. Then inserted the ends into the charge controller(cc) in their appropriate postive and negetive homes. The cc did have some very basic instructions but there was a lot to be desired in understanding the meaning of the codes and the proper ones to uae for programming.
I then took the male and female wire connectors and connected them to the back of the solar panel. That part is pretty dummy proof. The part that was a bit jinky was trying to decide which one was positive and negative to plug into the cc.
Once I got it all hooked up. It appeared to be working fabulously voltage was 12.3, battery status was 57%, Temp was 20 Celsius, Error code was E0 (which from my interpretation of the manual is good news) and the load mode was 00 (this part of the cc manual was as clear as mud) I monitored it for a bit and the battery status went from 57% to 69% in no time! This chick was thrilled! So thrilled I went to take a nap. When I woke a couple houts later the sun had moved a bit and to my surprise the battery status fell to 20% with no load on it! WThaaay??? I immeadiately disconnected everything and connected the generator.
Is it a dysfunctional panel or wonky control charger or maybe operator error? With no instuctions it is difficult to troubleshoot.
You can see the goop smears on the panel that were on it out of the box in the attached picture. Thinking about sending it back and should have put the 130 bucks towards gasoline! Either/or I am very disappointed.
If I am able to figure the issue I will adjust my review accordingly.
But, anyway. The kit I got came with a much cheaper controller, and the solar panel, I'll guarantee, has been sent back to them at some point. It was filthy. Literally mud on the back of it.
It was also nearly falling out of the packaging.
It's super easy to wire, but it looks like the panel might not be emitting a charge. I've done this before, so this isn't my first go round.
I'm going to try it in perfect sunlight in the coming days, but if it doesn't charge, I'll be contacting the company for a replacement.
Order the pieces separately. It's cheaper, and you might actually get what you order.
