It plays similarly to Clank but with a story that unfolds along the way. The game changes with each new chapter as new rules are added/removed. Certain decisions you make will change some aspect of the game permanently. Apparently, while the legacy aspect cannot be replayed, at the end of the story campaign you will have a unique version of the game that can be replayed. Haven't gotten that far yet.
The components are great. Minis are well defined, card art is in the same Clank style, stickers are good.
Only problem I had was that for the first game I didn't understand what I was supposed to do. The rulebook wasn't very clear on that part. After jumping straight in with some trial and error, we kinda figured out what to do.
Overall a really fun, light-medium game. Recommend to play with the same group until you complete the legacy aspect.
But I eventually decided to give this one a try. It was out first Legacy game ever and we absolutely loved it!
It starts like a fairly basic Clank! game, but then more and more thing happen and eventually there is a whole host of additional mechanics at play.
It is true that the games get longer and longer as new mechanics are unveiled. We didn't mind that at all since we were enjoying the game so much. This first couple games were probably 30 minutes of playtime after setup. The last couple of games were close to 4 hours (including setup and takedown). BUT... we play semi-cooperatively, intentionally stalling out the adventure row to prevent dragon attacks so the other person could achieve some goal. I believe if you play competitively the games would be much shorter.
It is also true that there is a bit of a lull after game 5 or 6. It kind of shifts from "Do the thing so you can reveal the new surprise" to "ok, you now know what you are doing... face this additional challenge". That might bother some people, but it didn't bother us at all.
Do you need to play one of the original Clank! games before playing this? I would recommend it, but it definitely isn't necessary.
More legacy games are one-time-through, then the game has been modified to much that it isn't really playable again. But this one is different. As you go through the story you make choices that modify several components of the game. But once you are finished with the campaign, you end up a version that is 100% playable and honestly superior to every other version of Clank!.
I plan to purchase this game again and play it all the way through with a different set of board gaming buddies.
Once you get past that, the game is enjoyable.
Most of the components are extremely nice.
The cards... well I would recommend getting enough sleeves to tackle the cards you will be shuffling a lot. I can be rough on cards, however, even being gentle are quick to get chipped.
We sleeved the adventure deck, starter decks, etc, while leaving the cardporium cards out.
Using 2 Eclipse Pro Matte 100 packs.
That is all you are gonna get from me, have fun, enjoy the adventure.
In just the first two games we've had numerous quests, a patron, and secrets that have drastically changed the game.
I almost gave this game 4 stars because it was missing sticker sheet B, but Direwolf responded instantly to my email and sent a PDF of the sheet while we wait for the publisher Renegade to send me the full sheet.
My sister's face when she realized she had to tear up, destroy and write on her gift was worth the price.
Even though the campaign is great fun, I think you end up with the best version of Clank! when you're through.
The freaking thrill and magic of the entirely new and, and everything is a surprise. I wish we could buy new campaigns for this instead of just retiring our franchise afterwards
