I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, a product of Catholic schools from 1st to 12th grade. I started writing stories from the time I was a little girl. Usually melodramatic dystopian tales featuring a shy, tortured girl left orphaned in the world. Luckily, my play list has gotten a tiny bit broader. I always wanted to be a writer but my parents were convinced that smart, black girls got REAL jobs: doctor, lawyer, teacher, architect. And besides, they said, I could write in my 'spare time'.

I graduated Howard Medical School and spent more than thirty years practicing medicine and raising my sons, managing to eke out the occasional short story or medical article for various journals. I am now the Medical Director of a Wellness center outside Chicago where I also live with a houseful of cats, chickens, one husband and a young child and mange to eke out the occasional novel.

It’s a bit of a difficult book to read. The good these women had—whatever they could preserve—was taken from them, and there is no turning away from it. But their power to protect the world and what is good in it—that was forged through generations, finding expression not just in a woman’s ability to transform material reality, but in the gift of healing, giving birth, loving each other—remains everlasting.

To categorize this book as "Historical Fiction" is misleading and deceptive to the reader. This mystical, fantasy story drags on and on, and I found myself struggling to reach the very disappointing end. I wish I had not invested the time or money I spent on this book.

Rita Woods’ deft writing and compelling narrative makes it difficult to believe that Remembrance is her debut novel. While some commenters have remarked that the jumps between points of view detract from the stories, I find that to be one of the novel’s strengths. Rita’s intriguing descriptions of Gaelle’s and Winter’s interactions, Margot’s survival and escape, Mother Abigail’s overarching presence and life in Remembrance propel the novel and compel contemplation of the women’s positions, predicaments and powers. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found her characters in all four settings memorable, remarkable, and relatable in their loss, endurance, suffering and flourishing.

Follow these women through their journeys as you learn of their losses, the horrible atrocities they endured, and watch them persevere.
