Product Description

After a turbulent childhood, the Morgan brothers went their separate ways, leaving the family cattle ranch and their cowboy days far behind. But now, one by one, they’re being called back home to California. Have they been summoned to save the land—or to start a new legacy?

Chase Morgan high-tailed it away from ranching life as soon as possible. But running a successful technology company can’t erase the memories, or secrets, of his youth. Coming home to help his Grandma Ruth may finally put some ghosts to rest—if he can just get a certain smart, beautiful houseguest out of his business. But getting her out of his head is proving even more difficult…

Determined to save the Morgan ranch, historian January Mitchell has pinned her hopes on the surprisingly rugged, surprisingly likable, and exasperatingly stubborn Chase. Surely his love of this breathtaking, mysterious land runs deep enough that he’ll once again embrace his inner cowboy. Or maybe, despite both of their skittish hearts, she’ll have to find a way to get him back in the saddle…any which way she can.

“If you love cowboys—and who doesn’t—you’ll love the Morgans!” --Cora Seton, New York Times bestselling author

The Reluctant Cowboy is the first book in Kate Pearce's latest series, aptly named Morgan Ranch. This is my first Kate Pearce book and it was an easy read, entertaining, with well drawn characters, some surprising events and definitely a solid introduction to the members of the Morgan family. The Morgan Ranch has been a family concern for generations but only Grandma Ruth remains to keep it going and that get's harder every year. She has a foreman & ranch hands, but only a small herd running on the vast acreage. She also has a young woman, January, who is researching the area as her thesis who helps out as much as she can; Ruth has been getting letters about an overdue loan that she knows nothing about and this is the trigger she uses to lure her oldest grandson, Chase, out of Silicon Valley to "home" where he grew up with three other brothers. It's not a happy return for the business man, but his business partners demanded he take a few weeks off, so he arrives, in a hire car, looking & feeling very much out-of-place. The place holds mostly bad memories for Chase & more than 10 years away haven't eased any of those feelings.

This is a story with several layers & I thought it could be read as a stand-alone, until Chase's brother "Blue" turns up after years in the military and everything gets more complicated. Chase and January have a "friends-with-benefits" thing going on - only after Chase has checked out everyone on the ranch to solve the loan mystery! He's not slow to start investigating this matter while January pushes him to understand the prospects she sees ahead for the Ranch. Blue throws himself into working hard trying to decide what's next for himself but he baulks at reuniting with his brother.

Title: The Reluctant Cowboy
Author: Kate Pearce

"After a turbulent childhood, the Morgan brothers went their separate ways, leaving the family cattle ranch and their cowboy days far behind. But now, one by one, they're being called back home to California. Have they been summoned to save the land or to start a new legacy?" -Kate Pearce

The Reluctant Cowboy is the first novel in a sparkling new series. Chase Morgan being the oldest of the five Morgan brother, as been called upon by his grandma Ruth to come back to the family ranch.

After a tragic past, Chase Morgan has avoided the Morgan Ranch at all cost until he receives a message to come home by his grandmother. He reluctantly agrees to return home to help his grandma but never expected the family ranch was in financial jeopardy. Chase offers to investigate. He also questions the motives of his grandmothers new house guest, January Mitchell.

January Mitchell- a historian- helps out Ruth with ranch chores in return to work on her thesis paper. January also believes Ruth can save her historical ranch by turning her ranch into organic farming and joining the tourist circuit. Chase on the other hand, believes Ruth should sell their beloved ranch, a ranch that has been in the family for several generations.

Even though he questions January's intentions, Chase is tasked to help out with ranch chores and show January around the ranch and the old abandoned town that's on the land. But once Chase puts on his cowboy boots he feels more at home than he did living in San Francisco. The longer Chase and January spend time together, the more and more they feel their attraction build towards each other. Chase's slowly starts opening his heart to January, his family and the ranch-his family legacy.

Ms. Pearce gives us a second chance, heartfelt story of love, family and redemption. The Morgan Ranch series is set in the Foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California. She also adds a touch of mystery concerning the financial transactions and the Morgan family.

If you love cowboys, second chances, family and redemption, then you need to read, The Reluctant Cowboy. This story grabbed my attention from "You have arrived at your destination" "I damn well have not" -Chase Morgan.

I received an ARC from Kate Pearce for an honest review. I can not wait to read the next novel in the Morgan Ranch series

Seriously. I was so caught up in this story of Chase and January that I didn't even realize it had come to an end! Such great characters. I wanted it to go on and on. And Oh my,... So many unanswered questions yet on The Morgan Ranch. Will the twin brothers ever come back home? What really happened to their mother and sister Rachel?? I want to know more about Chase and January's journey and what's in store for the other brothers and new found relationship with heir father. I really loved this story and definitely recommend it to others. I can't wait to read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic romance story, filled with love, angst, and a bit of mystery and intrigue thrown in for good measure. 28 April 2017

I absolutely love this series. I got book #2 as a freebie from BookBub and was so impressed I had to order all the other available books. I love the way this author writes. She has a way of grabbing your attention right from the start, and making each chapter so interesting that it keeps your attention all the way through the whole story. I've read books 1 & 2 so far, and can't wait to dive into book 3.

I absolutely loved this story about January and Chase. She's a very strong woman who survived a very unusal childhood, and a failed marriage. What I loved the most about her though, was the fact that she blamed no one for her failures. She just took every little bad thing that ever happened in her life, and somehow turns it into a positive. She was a very good influence on Chase, while slowly helping him turn his life around.

I also love Ruth. She's another very strong woman, one that people automaticially look up to, and admire for her wisdom and strength. And Roy, the foreman of the ranch, is a tough old bird with a heart of gold. Every character, including all of the secondary characters, have a way of making this whole story just come alive before your very eyes. This magnificent author has a way through her beautifully written words and descriptions, that just brings her characters and these stories come to life. I had no trouble picturing the beautiful scenery that surrounded the ranch, or the anguish and the joy on the faces of her characters. I felt all of the different emotions of these characters as they were going through them, themselves. They felt so real, like you could reach out and touch them. Like they were part of your family, or your friends. That's a real talented author, if you ask me.

And then there's the big mystery surrounding this family.........

A big mystery that started in book 1, about what really happened that tragic night 20 yrs. ago, that's kept me so intrigued more than anything. That night 14 yr. old Chase, the oldest of the 4 boys, came down the stairs right after he'd been woken up by a big ruckus going on betwwen his parents. But by the time he got downstairs, the only thing he saw was his father standing in the parlor drench in blood. It wasn't until after the sheriff showed up, that they realized that their mother and baby sister were missing. The father was never arrested for the crime, due to lack of proof and their body remains. At first they thought their father had killed them, and that they were buried somewhere on their vast expanse of family owned land, but so far...nothing has turned up. They couldn't ask their father what really took place that night, mainly because he dove so far into the the bottom of the bottle in order to numb himself, that they doubted his word, and shortly thereafter took off to Lord knows where. The events of that tragic night eventually tore the whole family apart.

But now their father has turned back up 20 years, and 10 years sober. He came back hoping to make amends with his sons and his mother, Ruth. It seems as though all the theories they had about that night was blown to smithereens, after their father confesses to what really took place. The question now is: Can they ever forgive their father for walking out on them? Will they ever figure out what really happened to their mother and baby sister? Are they really dead, or are they still alive? And if they are still alive...did their mother take their baby sister and flee the ranch that night with someone else's help, and if so....who helped them get out of town, and why?

I absolutely love the mystery and intrigue in this series. Every time I think I've got it all figured out, something comes up that blows my whole theory out of the water. Can't wait to read more.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4 4 February 2017

The plot is good and the characters are interesting. However, there were odd things that bothered me throughout the book. Chase has been called back to the family ranch by his grandmother, Ruth. She has been getting letters from an unknown bank saying that she is behind on her mortgage payments. The problem is that there is no mortgage on the ranch and she needs Chase to straighten the matter out for her. Instead of Chase visiting the bank (in the next town), he has an investigator look into the backgrounds of all the ranch hands (why?) and his grandmother (double why?). January is a young woman living at the ranch with his grandmother while completing her college thesis (yes, he has her investigated, too) and doing research into the ranch's history. Although they have differing viewpoints about the future of the ranch, they find that they are attracted to each other. There is also a 20 year old mystery about the disappearance of Chase's mother and sister. Add in 3 estranged brothers, a runaway father, and the mysterious person who mortgaged the ranch and you have enough side plots to keep you guessing.

MAJOR PEEVE: I spent much of my childhood on a farm and can't understand why these people would take a shower before doing chores like mucking out stalls and taking care of chickens. It happened several times in the beginning of the book.

Language and sexual situations may offend some readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Morgan Ranch book 1 6 December 2016
By NRMc - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first book I have read by Kate Pearce and is the first book in the Morgan Ranch series. First let me just say that after reading The Reluctant Cowboy I can not wait for the next one to come out and have already pre-ordered it.
Chase Morgan and his brothers are estranged and have left the family ranch (that has been in the family for generations) in the care of their Grandma Ruth, but when she needs helps with the ranch and trying to get the financials sorted she calls on Chase to come home and help. You better believe that their is no telling Grandma Ruth no. January Mitchell has been helping Grandma Ruth on the ranch with some of the chores, and had been trying to convince Ruth that its time to take the ranch into organic farming. Chase disagrees, and thinks its time to sell the ranch and relieve the family of the burden. January is outraged, how can you just sell the ranch that has been in your family for generations. We all know how tempers can quickly turn to attractions.

I am a sucker for a good cowboy romance and this is no exception. Time to turn your kindles to steamy ;)
