(This is volume one of three volumes meant to be read in sequence.)

Lovely, inexperienced Miss Carly Blakemore, only nineteen years of age, is received at her first post as governess for two precocious children, ready to love them as her own. But her biggest challenge will be their father; masterful and strong in everything—especially his kiss.

Poor and without dowry—and even worse—now orphaned, Miss Carly Blakemore is thrown into the Victorian world without aid. Carly is forced to seek a position as governess in the house of Lord Huntington, the Earl of Dunfordshire—a man alone in his own right—and under suspicion for the tragic murder of his well-known and adulteress wife. His governess’s honesty and forthrightness quickly offend his noble person, and he finds himself reeling from her constant evaluation of his lack of parenting skills. However, in the midst of his resentments, he finds himself strangely drawn in by her very no-nonsense ways that drive him to madness. Carly stands her ground in head-to-head battles of will that take her to the brink of dismissal.

Carly and the earl continually fight the feelings growing between them. Both are oblivious to the clouds of deceit and intrigue that are growing around the manor house, some bent upon removing the beautiful, headstrong governess permanently. A final desperate chase leads to an interception of a ship upon the high seas headed for the Mediterranean and a secret society of white-slave traders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Intense Romance! 17 May 2015
By Kara McKenzie, Author - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Ellise Weaver weaves a very intriguing story with a gripping romantic tension between her characters. I had a difficult time putting this book down and could wait for Lord Creighton and Carly to finally both trust in each other. There were underlying themes that made the story captivating, such as letting go and not fearing love, mysterious occurrences happening at the manor that weren’t resolved, and the importance children in need of unconditional love from their parent. Ellise paints a vivid picture of the historical setting and of the people of the times. I felt I deeply knew the characters by the way Ellise revealed so many of their thoughts and feelings. I rate this highly and have already purchased the second of Ellise's books in her series. I look forward to reading more very soon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweetness! 10 August 2013

I loved this book. I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was by far the sweetest book I have ever read in a historical romance. Carly Blakemore a sheltered vicar's daughter must take a post as a governess after her parents pass away. She accepts a post and travels to Huntington Manor to teach the children of Lord Creighton Huntington, the Earl of Dunfordshire. Lord Huntington is a brooding angry man who almost consumes Carly with his forceful personality. Carly is the sweetest, almost perfect woman to ever walk the earth. I thought I would hate this book because of how sweet Carly was but I fell in love with her too. She loves the Lord and this book is full of her spirituality. This story is full of passion, suspense, and most of all a lot of LOVE! I don't know why I loved this book so much but I did. It is a serial novel so the story did not end. You have to read the other two novels for the complete tale. I actually liked this method because I really did not want this story to end. So I was very glad to get all three volumes at one time to keep on reading. This story tugged my romantic soul and brought out emotions without a single bit of sex. Clean story, fanciful fairy tale and just plain SWEET!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Stereotypical plot but much better than the second book 8 September 2015
By CC - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is good, though filled with stereotypical themes: a wife dies, her husband is suspected; an eligible bachelor is fought over by all the neighbor girls; an angry father is softened by the gentleness of the governess; she is beautiful, she gets attacked (in the next book) by a man.

The second book, however, is very slow. Worse, the "hero" of the story turns abusive. He gets angry and instead of hitting Carly, he kisses her and then blames her for his lack of self control because she is too attractive to resist. Later she is attacked by a man who wishes to rape her and the "hero" sympathizes with the man because, "How could he blame Mr. Stone? She was a delight. A delectable treat prompting his mouth to water for want of her." I wish I could say that the context of this quote makes it okay, but it doesn't. Do yourself a favor and stop at the end of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean Romantic Drama 7 May 2017

I really liked this book for good clean reading. The main male character reminded me of "the Beast" from beauty and the beast, but only in his actions. A really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reading - clean Christian 21 April 2014

#1 - I knew that this was a series - PLUS Title & front of book say Book One -Volume One (therefore I don't understand some people complaining that it was a series.
#2 - I've had this book for about 6 weeks and I can't believe I waited so long.
#3 - This book was not 'preachy' as some think Yet it did show her faith in God and had her 'boss' pray with her before they ate a meal plus she attended church with others who work for him plus wanted to take the 2 kids.

And there are times that she must have prayed a great deal - even if it did not say so in the book - so much going on, conflicting feelings, most around her cared for her but there were others scheming to make her leave, and there is her 'boss. who cares for her but trying not to...

And there are the 2 precious kids who just need to be loved. Great reading.
Just a lot going on and was well written in such a way that I felt a part of 'being' there.

I also want to state that this book tells of their everyday living so there will be times of her 'teaching' the kids by doing, researching, playing parts - which I greatly enjoyed reading. There are times that she is simply enjoying the outdoors by herself or with the kids. Life in action. To some readers they may think slow, to readers like me - I enjoyed reading this.

Even though a reader could stop with this book, I suggest you have all 3 available to continue reading. - That's what I've done so that my stopping last night with #1 is like simply stopping in the middle, I can continue reading today.
