Only One Can Survive The Reckoning

Erin Radkey has always known the day would come when she would have to personally confront the Triad leader of the power-hungry Emporium. But she never thought it would be with a snake in her head that feeds on her energy. Or that she’d be in the company of an uncertain ally who might turn on her at any moment.

The stakes are high as new intel uncovers a startling Emporium plot that will catapult the entire world into war. Erin is determined to save not only the mortals but also her friends—even if it means sacrificing herself and her newfound love for Ritter Langton.

Ritter is just as determined to save Erin and prevent what would usher in the most bloody century the world has ever known, but even he might not recognize the person she becomes.

Every day the enemy grows stronger. There will be no second chance.

2.0 out of 5 stars But I've gotten bored with it and the constant battles between the Renegades ... 1 April 2017

Ugh. Giving up on this series. It's not what I thought it would be. Ritter and Erin finally get together. Married. But I'm not feeling the romance. And I'm not sure we'll get it. Not that I expected this to be a romance, bcs the focus is not on that at all. But I've gotten bored with it and the constant battles between the Renegades and the Emporium. I found this book kind of boring even though some of the action scenes were held me captive.

I guess I feel things were anti-climatic??? The romance, the battles, etc. Idk I fell kind of flat for me. So I'm done with the series. I think many readers would enjoy it, don't get me wrong, it's just not for me. The writing is okay and leaves much to be desired, the plot mostly awesome....but idk. It just fell flat for me.

I got annoyed at Erin being overly protective of her brothers.
I got annoyed at Erin continuing to put off her and Ritter.

I just got annoyed. A lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid culmination to the series 14 September 2014

I have enjoyed the entire series. It is consistently well written and engaging. The ending leaves an opening for another series, perhaps, but it feels like all the major conflicts are addressed. This installment continues with Erin's first person perspective. She has grown in her knowledge and confidence since the first book, The Change. Each successive volume has seen her acquiring more and more control over her newfound ability but there is always some associated cost or difficulty. In this book she has become as badass as her love interest, Ritter and in many ways her skills complement his as much as they seem to emotionally complete one another. They both have a vendetta of two to settle with the Emporium. Like all their Renegade friends they would prefer to get on with their lives, however extended they might be, and the Emporium (and specifically Delia) stands in the way.

I read the last half of the book in one sitting. The reason I didn't read the entire book straight through was the time constraint of other obligations not a reflection on the quality of the story. I kept coming back to the book whenever I could. I'm not sure which of the four books I liked best or even if it matters much. I preferred The Escape, Book 3, as I found that particular storyline more intriguing as it brought the Hunters more fully into the conflict. In this installment it is almost entirely a battle between he Renegades and the Emporium - as it needs to be to complete the series. Scores must be settled and disasters prevented and largely it falls to Erin to make the choices - with a lot of help from her friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick up the series and read them all, I highly doubt you will be disappointed! 18 August 2014

This is the first review I've written for a book. I'm probably going a bit backwards starting with this book that just came out, but oh my goodness, this series is everything I've been looking for! I started reading Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance a couple of years ago and since then I've devoured Nalini Singh's, Ilona Andrew's, Patricia Brigg's, Laura Adrian's, Thea Harrison's, and D.B. Reynolds' books (just to give an idea of what I normally read as a point of reference). I've been searching for another series that will take me to a place where I'm so immersed in a book that time seems to stop and all that exists is what's going on in the book. Considering I read all four of these books over the weekend, I can definitely say that Teyla Branton has taken me to literary heaven.

She's crafted such a wonderful world. All of her characters are incredibly fleshed out and she displays a lot of finesse with character development. There is a perfect amount of detail describing the scenes, that allows me to be able to picture the scene that's occurring, but does not slow the pacing of the story down. There are so many twists in all of her books as we learn what's going on, but they all truly make sense and add to the development of the story. Once I started reading the first book, The Change, I could not put the book down. I immediately started reading the next book…and then the next…and then this one. I was very disappointed that there wasn't a fifth to read yet, because I really want to see what happens next.

I may not have always wanted some of the twists and turns that happened, in The Reckoning in particular, to actually happen, but I've loved nearly everything so far, I can only impatiently wait to see what happens next. I know I'm already going to be rereading this series soon, as I read through it so quickly I want to pick up on some things that I might have missed and see how everything plays out knowing now what I do. Once I do that, I'll try to remember to update my review so that way it has more specifics for this book in particular.

If you've read the rest of the series, this book will make your heart happy (especially if you're a fan of romance/Erin and Ritter). If you haven't read the series, and you just happened upon this book, unless your literary tastes are a lot different than mine, you will not be disappointed at all if you start reading The Change (first book). Once I started reading Nalini Singh's books, I began comparing all of the other books to her level of world building and character development. If you've read any of Nalini's books, I think you will love this series. I will admit I normally read books that have a little bit more steam to them, but I know the author's preferences do not lean in that direction. I do like the balance that she struck in The Reckoning in the romance department, but I just wish there was a bit more of it in the earlier books. Honestly though, I really think that's just because I'm a bit greedy when it comes to romance scenes. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this book and this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series! Well Done! 10 August 2014

I have read each of these books and literally could not put them down for long. I was completely pulled into the story and the lives of each character, I enjoyed reading these books that did not have vampire and werewolf junk in them, I also enjoyed the fact that it was not dripping in sex and cursing. In my opinion many books have an overflow and leave nothing to our own imaginations. I will say between books there was no relaxing of the suspense it built and stayed right on the edge throughout, Well done! Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 3 October 2014

I read the whole series, which is odd for me. I usually read the first book, then start another book by another author, but with this series, as soon as I finished one book I'd buy the next one and not come up for air until it was time to buy the next book. The action is almost non-stop. There is something for everyone in this series. And it's clean entertainment which is rare today. After finishing the last book I wanted more since I got so attached to the characters, who are almost immortal. You will not be disappointed with these books.
