Product Description

She likes it quick and dirty.

I like orders and rules.

She hates small talk.

I hate to share.

She’s an open book.

I’m a closed dresser drawer.

She rides a Harley.

And that drives me f’ing nuts.

Annalyse and I have both lived in our own personal hells for half a decade. She’s learned to love the warmth, and I’m still consumed. But my new neighbor is stoking more than my libido these days. We agreed on only pleasure. But she changed the rules.

And now I’m not even sure what they are.

Maybe there’s a reason she found me that night, maybe there’s a reason I can’t stop thinking about her, maybe there’s a reason for the pain. Maybe not.

We all look for reasons in life. Reasons for death, love, pain. Why one thing happens and not another? It’s human nature. We’ve been looking for the meaning of life since the beginning of time. But maybe the reason for all of it — life, love, loss, heartache — is the curvy brunette living next door.

5 + stars. Reviewed by Gemma on behalf of Your Next Hot Read

So I finished this book a few days ago but I’m still not sure where to begin with my review. No matter what I write I will not do this book justice but I will try. This is the second book of Prescott’s I’ve read and yet again she has done it – reduced me to tears (in a good way I promise) and made me take this book to heart. She has become a new one-click author for me and I will not hesitate to buy her other books.

Annalyse is a free-lance writer and has travelled all over the world. She has finally decided that it’s time to stop running and live with the burn that consumes her every day. She goes home to housesit for her sister, Meg, and ends up saving her sexy as hell next door neighbour, Holt, in more ways than one.

Holt is a doctor and resident bachelor on the lake. He has his own demons to face in the fire but he is not ready to do that. He is happy living in his own environment where he can control everything and everyone around him. That is until he meets Annalyse. Is she real? Is she a dream? Only time will tell.

Annalyse and Holt are both broken people, scarred by incidents that occurred on Halloween 5 years ago. They vow not to fix each other, to simply provide pleasure, but can this truly make them happy? And can two broken people really agree to not try to fix each other?

I don’t want to go into too much detail about Holt and Annalyse as I don’t want to ruin the rollercoaster of a journey that their relationship takes. Annalyse is one tough cookie. She owns her flames in the fire and despite a horrific past, has learned to love the warmth that the fire gives. How she carries on I have no idea as I don’t think I could in her shoes.

I was sitting down enjoying a coffee scrolling through Instagram one morning and saw this book mentioned, I one clicked and finished it within the day.
This is the first Prescott Lane booked I’ve read and I was completely engrossed.
As Garth Brooks sings "Standing outside the fire, Life is not tried, it is merely survived, if you're standing outside the fire.”
Holt and Annalyse have both individually suffered tremendous loss all centred around separate Halloween heartaches. Together they take us on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs as they come to terms with the heartache of the past and learn to stand together and face the flames and internal fire of loss, life and love and the possibility of a happy future together.

2 very troubled souls have this instant connection. However due to their demons they vow not to heal the other. Of course it becomes more. Annalyse is finally getting herself together but it takes a lot for Holt to let go.
The author takes you through their issues & it is a very heartfelt tale. At times it's very deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a New Favorite! 20 October 2016

Every so often, I come across a novel with a world so deeply rooted in heartfelt emotions and relatable characters that I find myself wishing it would never end. With the completion of The Reason for Me, I’ve now read two Prescott Lane novels – and both left me with this desire. This author grounds her characters in real, heartbreaking life situations that every reader can relate to in one way or another. The Reason for Me is a moving, poignant story of love, life, and, above all else, healing.

“That’s the thing about hell— no one’s coming to save you. There are no white knights in shining armor. You’ve got to save yourself. You’ve got to learn not to throw gas on the flames. And the most you can hope for is to find someone who will stand in the fire right beside you.”

What I loved most about Annalyse and Holt was how similar, yet opposing, the two characters were. Annalyse fought her way back from a place of utter loss and darkness to become this strong, blazing phoenix. Though she faces demons every day, she was still choosing to find light, which everyone knows is easier said than done. However, it also instilled a tremendous amount of empathy for Holt’s plight, and helped his character to not come across as cold and aloof. The way that Lane plays these two personalities off of each other was incredibly gratifying and perfect in the method of delivery. I truly felt like I was on this journey of discovering Holt’s past and learning to forgive and let go with him; I was learning to accept who he was, yet hoping for a change, right beside Annalyse. The author does a phenomenal job at making what these two have been through feel real and relatable, which results in feeling utterly immersed in this standalone novel’s world.

“But I’ve learned the heart is flexible. It breaks, it bends, it skips beats, and thunders in your chest, but it goes on— waiting and hoping and fighting.”

Not only did Prescott Lane create unforgettable characters, but I just couldn’t get enough of her writing style – as evidenced by the amount of highlights. She interjected perfectly timed humor in order to help balance the heavier nature of the overall plotline. I can honestly say I giggled as much as I cried, which was such a good thing for the soul. Furthermore, I loved the ingenious way she allowed Holt to get to know Annalyse. It’s unique and absolutely adorable, but also created a sense of how difficult it can be to speak to someone about our pasts.

“So go left, go right. It really doesn’t matter. What matters is that you do something, choose something. And if you have to choose something, why not choose something great? Like hope, like love. Like happy.”

I read a lot of books and fall in love countless times, but I can’t sing enough praise for this one! The Reason for Me was a beautiful story of loss and learning to move on with our lives. It somehow broke me, yet put me back together again into something more beautiful. It’s definitely one of my top favorite reads of the year and if you’re looking for an unforgettable read, look no further. You’ll definitely want to click this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Haunting and Beautifully Hopeful!!! 19 October 2016

I had to take a day before writing this review as I spent yesterday trying to find words perfect enough to do justice to this brilliant work. It's now day two and I am hopeful I can do this. This book deserves the perfect words...or at least words from my heart. I have read all of the books published by Prescott Lane and now I just click "buy" and don't even look at the description for the story. This is clearly why, at this point, I feel stunned and unprepared. I have watched this author's work evolve and she has reached an apex with this book. The characters are written in such a way that not only are they fully realized they could be living next door. That real folks...stunningly real and haunting. The story...Holy had such depth, twists and turns, was shattering, devastating, with tiny smatterings of humor, but always with the undercurrent of hope. Without the component of "hope" I would not have made it. Not because I would not have finished the book but because I would have been gutted and shattered. I have never read a book with a story that literally made me cry. The "ugly cry" that is described in the book. My husband told me, "maybe you should stop reading this one". I hissed at him and told him to "back away". Yup! I found this book so darn compelling because one character's pain was made clear and in your face very early on. The This was a brilliant move because I knew I was being lead around, just like a game of cat and mouse, by this author and until she was done with me she was just going to toy with me. Writing like this just does not happen by accident. It takes a masterfully skilled hand to achieve this and achieve it she did. At the end of the book I was exhausted and thrilled all at the same time...and was "ugly crying" once again. I wanted more pages and made sure none were left. Each and every word had purpose and the vision of the author was clear. Ms. Lane should be incredibly proud of this work. This storyline could have gone horribly off track in the wrong hands but this author was clearly without fear. I am honored that I was allowed to read this book. A very odd thing one might say for a book I bought but to have experienced this story was something I will remember for a long time and it will go up on my "Prescott Lane" area of my library. As an aside I also want to thank her for respecting all of her readers by publishing this work in paperback for those of us who still love our book books. Thank you so very much for this stunning work. denise bailey

Reason For Me is a book that will stay with me for a long time. "Choose Happy" is a quote from the book that I'll use daily as my mantra. This book took me on a wonderful journey and while reading the book I also learned some valuable lessons, lessons that I can be applied in everyday life. The heart needs time to heal, to hurt, to forgive, to make peace with the senseless and make room to accept, to beat loudly enough for us to listen. Thank you Prescott Lane for writing such an amazing book. I recommend this book to everyone, they will not be disappointed.
5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS BOOK!! 19 October 2016

This book was absolutely amazing!! Such a touching and sometimes heartbreaking, beautiful story of loss and finding the strength to live through the pain and "choose happy."

Annalyse has suffered the loss of her husband but after years of running from the pain and heartache, she is ready to open herself up to the possibility of finding love again. When she meets her sister's neighbor, Holt, she recognizes that like her, he has suffered a loss as well. She also sees that he is still not able to face his pain and keeps himself closed off.

Through a series of incidents, Annalyse and Holt keep running into each other and the chemistry is off the charts! They agree to be friends with benefits with only one rule "pleasure only" no drama, no dating and certainly no hearts involved. But sometimes rules get broken and feelings grow.

Can Annalyse and Holt heal each other and "choose happy" together? Read this story and find out!!

I LOVED this book! Both characters are fantastic and I loved getting both of their POVs. I was sucked into this story from the very beginning and was truly sorry to see it end. I experienced so many emotions reading this story, sometimes laughing and other times, crying and I loved every minute of it. Prescott Lane is such a talented author and I love everything I have read by her!! I highly recommend this book to everyone!

There is a reason I continually seek out this author's latest book. Real, true, sometimes raw feelings from her characters! This book is an easy read and has several laugh out loud moments of truth.

Favorite quote:
"That seemingly irrelevant decision- to walk, to move, to go forward--- became more important than what car to buy, what college I went to, and all the other bulls*** choices I seem to agonize over."

I find this quote so true and, since I've read it, I keep it in the back of my mind when I'm worrying over something that probably won't matter in the long run. I recommend this book as it is full of hope and real, human emotion.
