Absorbing, fast paced. Looking forward to more of Matt Barnes's exploits.

I found it a relaxing read, not too absorbing and not too demanding. Not quite up to the James Patterson style or similar

Poor stuff...

Having read a couple of Michaels stand alone books, I thought I'd try the first in this series....wish I hadn't bothered. The sample starts off well enough but quickly reached the point that I felt I was reading a book either designed for a kid or written by one. Seriously...no cop uses the expression "What's going down?", or "Doing bird", and if anyone ever answered the phone to me and said "Speak to me" they'd be talking to themselves. I don't know where he's been going for his research, or who he's been asking, but he's so far off the mark if this is how he thinks things really are. I know it's fictional entertainment but c'mon, if you're going to write violent thrillers and chuck a bit of police procedural stuff into the mix, at least get some of the basics right if only for the sake of a little authenticity.

Error strewn.

I didn't get too far onto this before giving up. I find it completely off putting when an author fails to carry out out some basic research and proceeds to include certain elements in their writing that they clearly kniw nothing about. Medical matters for one. 2 chapters in and our hero has been shot, has lost a kidney and is in ICU. First if all, why is he even in ICU as he's not on a ventilator. I could forgive that one but when the consultant has a go at lightening the situation by warning him aabout the nurses coming at him with a bedpan, reality gets up and leaves the building. Are we to believe that a consultant surgeon who has just performed a nephrectomy would not insert a urinary catheter to monitor the patient's urinary output post operatively? But there's more. The patient in the next bed has a colostomy bag hanging out below the sheets. Please don't let me ever be admitted to this hospital because this poor soul must have a stoma that protrudes about 12 inches from her abdomen. Thst ended it for me. Author making it up as he goes along trying to create drama but instead creates much laughter and head shaking in disbelief. If this was his homework essay the report card would say 'must try harder'.

Gripping and readable, not very plausible

An exciting enough tale with plenty of action and guns, but nothing much beyond that. With Italian gangsters, lots of guns and Americanisms aplenty, it would have made much more sense to set it somewhere in America rather than London.
The characters are fairly one-dimensional and the romance is described in a very analytical way rather than shown through the development of Matt and Beth's relationship.
All of the police officers except Matt are basically useless or corrupt and the killer runs rings around them. Matt overcomes the killer through vigilanteism (while recovering from life-threatening injuries) rather than actual police work.
I'm not sure why the American hitman was in it, he didn't actually contribute to the story or even do anything.
No explanation was given of where the killer learned to become such an expert with weapons, infiltration, tactics, etc - we're told that due to his mental issues he would never have been accepted into the armed forces, so where *did* he learn it?
But if you can switch off your brain, you can just about suspend disbelief far enough to enjoy a few hours reading this.

Rubbish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2020Verified Purchase
Not just rubbish but utter rubbish. No character development, a plot twist at the end that is painfully obvious, and sex scenes that could have been written by a teenage boy. There is no character development because the main character has no room to develop. He starts as a superman, where can his character go? The "plot twist" is as obvious as it is unsatisfactory, on a number of levels. The less said about the sex scenes, the better.
The main villain has an office decorated with pictures of USA gangsters. Really?
Spoiler alert, if you want to read this book about the next paragraph.
At one point someone who has been abused, blackmailed, filmed secretly, and thrown aside agrees to become a willing partner in murder when asked. She then changes her mind without any real reason other than to provide another gory death scene.
Do not waste your time, or money. Let my mistake stop you from making one.

I wish English authors who set their books in the UK would stop writing as if they are in America.
Reasons for 3 stars?
Too many Americanisms
We Brits don't have coffee and donuts for breakfast, we have bacon butties and tea
We Brits wear knickers not panties
Do we have any stunning 30 something profilers ? Would they be so included in police work on an everyday basis?
Silly virtually instant love scenario
How did Noon go from being a teenager who pushed his mother down the stairs to a marksman with such professional skills and a trained killer?
Had this been set in America it would have been up there close to the better authors. However this was set in the UK and at some points dragged out with slop to extend the length of the book.
The author needs to decide. Thriller action or romance. I don't connect the two in a decent book because then it becomes too predictable.
It is worth reading but I won't be paying for the next one.
