I loved this book! The premise is that Riley the main character is shipped off to an island to be a cast member of a reality show. When I started reading, I was surprised by how well written the book is. The author seems to know how reality TV works and builds believable situations. She also demonstrates an understanding of the human heart and the fragility within us all. All along the way, there are little clues here and there framed as Riley's thoughts, but in the end, all of those threads come together for a satisfying climax. One of the worst sins in a book for me personally is being too predictable, but the author manages to create the setup and provide the right clues to keep your mind turning without making the finish apparent. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new author.
Now there are some minor issues as well, and I would be remiss not to touch on them. There are some minor editing issues. I found a single spelling error in the middle of the book. There are also a few consistency issues as you read along. Riley seems to have a relationship with a character called "Deadsea" that appears out of thin air. She is banking on having these conversations with this character, but the formation of that relationship doesn't appear in the story. It's there and then gone again just as suddenly. I could also debate on the author's choice to not include a clear antagonist earlier in the book, but that choice also is what makes the climax so satisfying. The main issue I have is that the stakes don't rise much until the final half of the book. The stakes are evident in the opening salvo of the book, but there's no added tension as the story progresses until many plot threads converge in the second half.
Tiffany Brooks is an exceptional author, and I can't wait to see how she progresses her stories and her craft. If you find this book on sale, definitely buy it!
