It's evident much thought has gone into the approach of Rainier Fog by AIC, but it never once comes off as pretentious, inflated or overambitious. AIC know they aren't in the spotlight anymore, so have focused very much on lyrical/thematic content that encapsulates these 10 bare songs, for which the music is the backdrop rather than the main contender; ensuring Rainier Fog provide an atmosphere as well as a mood. This album is mellow, sombre and it lumbers in a dirge from song to song, until you gradually learn that there is an addiction to them that goads you to repeat the album just one more time. I did not find another 'Nutshell' or 'Angry Chair' on Rainier Fog. There is no 'Them Bones', 'Last of My Kind' or 'Acid Bubble'. It's its own kind of beast. Opener 'One You Know' pounds itself addictively in your mind. The title track epitomises the AIC blueprint across the two prior albums. 'Red Giant' changes the pace and dynamic ever so slightly, while 'Fly' settles things down before 'Drone' brings aforementioned dirge to its culmination. 'Deaf Ears..' mellows the tone of the album, an excellent song. 'So Far Under' satisfies my need for an intense groove, probably the most 'Black Gives Way-ish' of all the songs. The album closes with 'All I Am', a sad piece, but not before sending a reminder of still being here, in 'Never Fade'.
Rainier Fog will not bring new fans, instead it will satisfy old and current ones. If there are negatives, I would echo some of the sentiments I heard whilst hearing reviews online, ie. the harmonic patterns Cantrell and Duvall fall into are too often samey-sounding. Not once does this album try to experiment, which means these are slow burners and not firecracker hits. I heard one or two lyrical themes repeated from prior albums. However, while I truly expected something a little bit 'harder' from AIC, they've still spoken loudly: We are here, we are alive, and we're the most consistent of grunge bands around.
