I don’t like vampires. I don’t like vampire-like creatures. I don’t like stories about vampires or vampire-like creatures. But I loved this book. I loved it, for one thing, because it surprised me. It is unlike any other supernatural creature genre book out there. It is absolutely non-conforming, yet, remarkably, it still fits the genre.
So for those of you who do like stories about vampires and/or vampire-like creatures, you will find some familiar elements plus a lot of great stuff that rarely shows up in other works in the genre. For those of you who don’t, you will find that you can love this book anyway because it has all the right stuff: page-turning action driven by surprising turns of events, sophisticated layers of meaning, and a cast of characters that you can fall in love with.
The story is a great blend of plot-driven and character-driven. Even the moments in which the author lets off a little on the accelerator to allow the reader take a breath, I couldn’t put the book down because I was dying to know what choices the characters were going to make.
The protagonist, Beth Rider, is a writer who has written a novel that threatens to turn the entire Rakum world upside down, and the Rakum aren’t going to go down without a fight. It turns out to be a bigger fight than they bargained for, however. How much damage can a woman with a pen (and a little help from her writing partner) inflict on an ancient race of beings who’ve spent centuries at the top of the food chain?
