Product Description

When Max and Alexei witness a skiing death in the French Alps, their suspicions are aroused. Gudrun, the victim’s partner, seems strangely unaffected and does not open up to their condolences. She leaves with the hint that she might need their services again.

Some weeks later Gudrun does in fact resume contact, explaining that she represents the Stockmann Institute, a mysterious, Oslo-based organisation, which is interested in offering them some part-time consultancy work. Their brief? Simply to befriend Freddie Ricketts, a young cyber genius, who spends his life in front of a computer screen. At this point, they will be able to continue with their jobs and lives, as long as they become Freddie’s cyber pals.

Freddie's activities come to the attention of certain people in China, the most populous country on earth. the upcoming superpower. This does not bode well. It gets worse when Freddie accepts their invitation to visit China. This rings alarm bells at the Stockmann Institute, so Gudrun asks Max and Alexei to nursemaid Freddie during his trip to the East. They can hardly stop him going, but must ensure he returns after the agreed couple of weeks. On no account can they allow Freddie's talents to be permanently acquired by our greatest commercial rival.

Freddie's invitation comes from a Chinese cyber friend, known as Panda, who meets the party - Freddie, Max and Alexei - at Kunming, then whisks them away to the depths of Yunnan province, where Freddie is installed in the 'Academy', a Cyber heaven with the sort of equipment he has so far only dreamed of. His 'mentor' is a young English speaking girl called Su.

Their worst fears are realised when Freddie tells Max and Alexei he would like to stay longer. No time scale is mentioned. Panda says he can fix any visa problems. There seems to be little Max and Alexei can do. Freddie Ricketts' talents have been lost to our biggest business rivals. Or have they?

Gudrun flies out to help Max and Alexei as the end-game gets underway. Can they ensure that the extraordinary talents of a naive Freddie Ricketts are enjoyed by his home country, not its biggest competitor? They are having to operate in an autocratic state, where western rules do not apply. Failure could be fatal or lead to a lifetime in a Chinese jail.

Panda and Su on the Chinese side, Gudrun, Max and Alexei for the European team, engage in a dance of death in this remote corner of China. Where will it end? The clue may be in the title: Road to Mandalay.
