""A Quiet Vendetta" is highly recommended for readers interested in the psychological makeup and motivation behind the actions of both the hunter and his prey. I am not going to get into the plot of this tale too much as it is great to discover all of it for yourself.
It starts off with a little bit of background about the man, Ernesto Perez who is the main protagonist of the story. He is a Cuban who came from a very violent father in the area around New Orleans. This shaped his life and most of the book is centered around him telling his lifestory to Ray Hartman due to his kidnapping the teenage daughter of a Louisiana congressman.
If you have already read any of his books you will already know of the twists and turns in his stories and this one is just like that - lots of fascinating detail which is allowed to surface slowly and keep you wanting to know more without wanting the story to end.
What more should I say? If you like well crafted, well told stories in the character driven style where the plot unravels slowly and surely rather than fast paced breathless tales then this may be for you.
I'm a big fan of all things Mafia, with Goodfellas and Casino being two of my favourite films. I mention them because this book struck me as being cinematic and made me think that if Scorsese got his hands on a copy he could turn it into another great film.
You get to follow a Mafia hitman over many years where he interacts with real life famous, or should I say, infamous, Mafia characters. It all sounded a bit cliche when I first read the introduction, but as per usual Roger's writing is just too good to allow the story to be in any way boring or trite. As I note others have said, Roger seems to be as much into describing a character's emotions rather than just telling a story. Sometimes for me his descriptive writing distracts from the story and I wish he would just get on with it, but that says more about me I think than him!
I've so far read all but one of his books and with the exception of City of Lies and Bad Signs, I've really enjoyed all of them. I also agree with others who have said that he really does deserve to be a household name. At the time of writing I note that more books are on the way and I'll be buying all of them.
Ray Hartmann, a down on his luck lawyer is the man Perez wants to tell his story to. While struggling with his own demons, Hartmann is compelled to listen to Perez, at first against his wishes and gradually because of a growing fascination for the killer.
And so begins a fascinating rapport between the two main characters. Two adversaries who are poles apart and yet in some ways similar, and, in an almost incomprehensible way, they understand, respect and empathise with each other.
All the while the FBI and the New Orleans PD are powerless to take any action. All they can do is listen. Perez is in control.
Meanwhile the Governor of Louisiana's daughter has been kidnapped and must be found before she is dead.....
I am a great fan of R J Ellory, and I would say that of all of his books that I have read, this is my favourite. It is beautifully written and full of fact intertwined with fiction. It tells of the rise and influence of the Mafia in the USA and as such gives great insight into American history.
Staring slowly, it soon draws the reader in and then propels itself into a breathtaking pace. It has lots of graphic violence and some pages conjure up disturbing images.
It's a story of love, loss, loyalty and revenge. A brilliantly crafted book that makes for unforgettable reading. A stunning novel.
I won't go into the plot details, as this is covered by other reviewers, but I particularly liked (and I know I shouldn't!) Ernesto Perez and the brilliant, Ray Hartmann. They are some of the strongest and likeable characters I have ever come across. Ernesto, in particular for me, as he was the bad guy with a heart of gold. The pace was completely breathtaking in the last quarter and, although I wanted answers, I really, by that stage, didn't want it to end.
I just love how R J Ellory writes with fast paced plots, twists and turns around every corner and strong, wonderful characters.
