Review
May well be the best Mafia novel since The Godfather, it's one damn fine book and should be highly recommended to all but the coziest of crime-fiction fans. -- Elliott Swanson ― Booklist USA
Beautifully written, this is a novel to get lost in, a novel to savor and one that is a long ride into the darkness, and if you recall reading Mario Puzo's The Godfather as a teenager [as I did], then this powerful book will make you relive that memory - Masterful but beware of the brutality, because it comes out of the most literate prose I have read for many years. -- Ali Karim ― SHOTS
Ellory got his thriller writing off to a good start with Candlemoth and followed up tidily with Ghostheart. This book, though, should propel him right up there to battle it out with the big boys ... a satisfying puzzler, and you'll be turning the pages at a brisk rate. ― LADSMAG
With exquisite pace and perfect timing, Ellory has given us a piercing assessment of the nature of love, loyalty and obsessive revenge, not to mention a deep understanding of la cosa nostra. -- Matthew Lewin ― GUARDIAN
Ellory's entrancing tale weaves the two storylines together, keeping you turning the pages ... this is one of the best mafia reads since Mario Puzo's Godfather ― BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY MERCURY
This is a beautifully written, atmospheric novel that warps effectively between a hugely enjoyable thriller and an authentic recreation of the claustrophobic Mob world of brutality and paranoia ― TRIBUNE --This text refers to the mass_market edition.

Long and violent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2020Verified Purchase
I really like the way RJ Ellory writes, he is excellent at painting a picture with words. This book definitely captures the sense of place and tells a reasonable story, slightly predictable though towards the end. However, it is quite drawn out and at times I wished he'd just get on with it. Also, I know it's about a mafia hit man, but sometimes I got the impression that he was just out to shock the reader with imaginative scenes of violence. All in all, readable and quite good

The Brit who writes of America like a British writer

I have read several of R J Ellory's books but thankfully there are still some more left to read [his later books as I am going through from earliest to now] - I tend to "save them as a treat" along with Robert Goddard, Lee Child and David Baldacci - all of them are wonderful story tellers.
I am not going to get into the plot of this tale too much as it is great to discover all of it for yourself.
It starts off with a little bit of background about the man, Ernesto Perez who is the main protagonist of the story. He is a Cuban who came from a very violent father in the area around New Orleans. This shaped his life and most of the book is centered around him telling his lifestory to Ray Hartman due to his kidnapping the teenage daughter of a Louisiana congressman.
If you have already read any of his books you will already know of the twists and turns in his stories and this one is just like that - lots of fascinating detail which is allowed to surface slowly and keep you wanting to know more without wanting the story to end.
What more should I say? If you like well crafted, well told stories in the character driven style where the plot unravels slowly and surely rather than fast paced breathless tales then this may be for you.

Roger's done it again.
I'm a big fan of all things Mafia, with Goodfellas and Casino being two of my favourite films. I mention them because this book struck me as being cinematic and made me think that if Scorsese got his hands on a copy he could turn it into another great film.
You get to follow a Mafia hitman over many years where he interacts with real life famous, or should I say, infamous, Mafia characters. It all sounded a bit cliche when I first read the introduction, but as per usual Roger's writing is just too good to allow the story to be in any way boring or trite. As I note others have said, Roger seems to be as much into describing a character's emotions rather than just telling a story. Sometimes for me his descriptive writing distracts from the story and I wish he would just get on with it, but that says more about me I think than him!
I've so far read all but one of his books and with the exception of City of Lies and Bad Signs, I've really enjoyed all of them. I also agree with others who have said that he really does deserve to be a household name. At the time of writing I note that more books are on the way and I'll be buying all of them.
Enjoy.

Ernesto Perez, retired number one hit-man for the Mafia, gives himself up to the FBI. He wants to tell his life story to one man, and he holds all the cards....
Ray Hartmann, a down on his luck lawyer is the man Perez wants to tell his story to. While struggling with his own demons, Hartmann is compelled to listen to Perez, at first against his wishes and gradually because of a growing fascination for the killer.
And so begins a fascinating rapport between the two main characters. Two adversaries who are poles apart and yet in some ways similar, and, in an almost incomprehensible way, they understand, respect and empathise with each other.
All the while the FBI and the New Orleans PD are powerless to take any action. All they can do is listen. Perez is in control.
Meanwhile the Governor of Louisiana's daughter has been kidnapped and must be found before she is dead.....
I am a great fan of R J Ellory, and I would say that of all of his books that I have read, this is my favourite. It is beautifully written and full of fact intertwined with fiction. It tells of the rise and influence of the Mafia in the USA and as such gives great insight into American history.
Staring slowly, it soon draws the reader in and then propels itself into a breathtaking pace. It has lots of graphic violence and some pages conjure up disturbing images.
It's a story of love, loss, loyalty and revenge. A brilliantly crafted book that makes for unforgettable reading. A stunning novel.

Another fantastic book by R J Ellory, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the others, particularly Candlemoth, but it's extremely enjoyable and I couldn't put it down.
I won't go into the plot details, as this is covered by other reviewers, but I particularly liked (and I know I shouldn't!) Ernesto Perez and the brilliant, Ray Hartmann. They are some of the strongest and likeable characters I have ever come across. Ernesto, in particular for me, as he was the bad guy with a heart of gold. The pace was completely breathtaking in the last quarter and, although I wanted answers, I really, by that stage, didn't want it to end.
I just love how R J Ellory writes with fast paced plots, twists and turns around every corner and strong, wonderful characters.
Excellent.
