This book, the first in the series of Lady Hardcastle and her faithful assistant, Flo, is set in countryside England in the early 1900s. Flo and her mistress have an atypical relationship in that they speak irreverently to each other, which is often commented upon by other characters in the book. It's the relationship between the two leading ladies that make the book such a giggle.
There is crime to solve and it is clever and doesn't feel contrived at all, but it's the relationships of the characters that feels so real and makes this book a joy.
I've read the second book and can't wait to download the third too.
Lady Hardcastle and her wonderful "Servant" (who is more of a friend and companion) become involved in two murder investigations These two ladies are characters in their own right, but in dealing with sleuthing in their village they meet many other characters both upstairs and downstairs.. I really enjoyed this book - often funny never boring and has you guessing who it was that was the murderer. Highly recommended
A pleasant little read - Miss Marple meets Jessica Fletcher. Mix a few quirky characters, upstairs & downstairs, an English country village and a couple of old-fashioned murders and you have the first book in the Lady Hardcastle series. I'm looking forward to catching up with Lady Hardcastle and Flo again.
Not since Indiana Jones and Poirot have I fallen in love with a historical mystery series and character like Lady Hardcastle. These are exceptionally well developed characters with strong voice, wit and personality plus clever hints at a detailed backstory that convincingly makes them who they are, as well as promising many more adventures to be revealed in their past and future. The range of secondary characters were as clearly defined, entertaining bunch as in any Agatha Christie, and the mystery plot detailed and convincing enough for a great fun read. If any of my own readers get as much enjoyment from strong female protagonists in close friendships as I have from this book, I would be a very satisfied author.
Love these characters and their banter. Mystery of the murder solved again by these very clever and interesting ladies. Sometimes I have to resort to googling some words used by these ladies , educational as well as entertaining .
I like the characters in these books and as I read to escape this world and just enjoy another time and place with the old morals and ethics I enjoy this read. I do recommend this series. I started at the beginning of the series and will continue to follow their exploits. Recommended to all cosy mystery fans.
Lady Hardcastle and her maid of many (mostly unexpected) skills, move to the country in expectations of leading a quiet life. But Life has no intention of being quiet wherever these two are and they very quickly find themselves in the neighborhood of murder. Given their extraordinary background and inquisitive natures, there's absolutely no question that they will apply themselves to solving the case.
I love stories written about around the early 1900's. I found it a little difficult to get into but once I got into it i found it more and more difficult to put down. I really enjoyed reading this book. Thank you :)
I started out not very keen on this book, but soon got into it and really enjoyed the banter between Flo and Lady Hardcastle. I also liked the description of life in England early in the 20th century. I will probably purchase more books in this series.
I liked the characters and the setting of this book. The policeman is not an idiot and he welcomes the help from the two female protagonists. This seems to be a good beginning for a well written light who dunnit series.
