About the Author

Craig Russell is the author of the Jan Fabel thrillers set in contemporary Hamburg and the Lennox series set in 1950s Glasgow. He is the only non-German to have been awarded the Polizeistern (Police Star) by the Polizei Hamburg. He has been shortlisted for the CWA Duncan Lawrie Golden Dagger, the French Prix Polar, the 2012 Bloody Scotland Crime Book of the Year and the 2013 Ellis Peters Historical Dagger, and has won the CWA Dagger in the Library and the 2015 Bloody Scotland Crime Book of the Year

I first heard about Craig Russell's novels from the Times of London's mystery newsletter. Sign up for it. The Quiet Death of Thomas Quaid is the most recent of these novels set in post WWII Glascow. These are wonderfully atmospheric Chandlerian mysteries. Though not currently published in the United States, they're well worth getting online. I got mine from Amazon. And: Wow, what great reads.

I recommend reading the novels in order since they're written chronologically. Good words to you.

Great 50's Glasgow Murder Mystery

Set in 1950’s Glasgow this is a very atmospheric and funny novel with a great detective story. Tommy Quaid dies whilst undertaking a task for his friend Lennox, who as a private detective was already suspicious of the client, certain his death is not the tragic accident that the police think. Digging further into “Quiet Tommy’s” death he starts to uncover connections that leads him into trouble and using his network in the police and the criminal underworld he is determined to track down the killer. One of the attractive elements of Craig Russell’s writing style is his unique way he builds a very vivid picture of fifties Glasgow. Not only is it entertaining it is also educational with details of immigration and accents that created Glasgow’s special culture. Add all this to the excellent storyline and the exciting action involved in tracking the killer and you get an superb novel.

And for sure the most hard-boiled of the whole series because of the story of Quiet Thomas Quaid. Who is one of the few friends Lennox call this way in the crime-ridden Glasgow of 1958. Lennox is on his way to prove to the "Forces in Command" that he is really capable of improvement. Will say - a white, lily-white rap-sheet to finally be able to return to his home in Canada. He is not a real criminal, no convictions at all - but the WAR has left its traces on his character, in more tha onla one way.
Of all this very few true friends Lennox appreciates Tommy's open, friendly and peaceful personality. But Tommy is also a master thief. his nick-name "Quiet" resulted to everyone and his brother or sister that he was simply "quietly" coming along with the Polis, when he got caught. But also quiet in his behavior and absolutely to trust with all - almost all - Your secrets. But something goes dramatically wrong on a job Lennox takes. He has to recover some... secret plans in a foundry. An easy job after midnight, but Tommy - who had a very bad feeling before entering - comes to a bad end. And Lennox has to look over his shoulders because of some brute henchmen being after the secret "plans" Tommy should have taken. But his dead was pre-ordered by people so mighty and obviously high above human laws that they kill without think about it.
But Tommy will NOT go down quietly - Lennox and his friends on both sides of Scot Law will see to that! Secrets he "found" in someone's safe concerned people who committed the most hideous of crimes - that to the innocent, the little ones, the children. But they have been elected to protect them! That doesn't matter to people so perverted. But from beyond the grave, Tommy leaves a trail for Lennox to follow to ensure justice is done. For once, Lennox is on the side of the angels. But he is an avenging angel, together with one of the Three Kings - Handsome Johnny Cohen - and even a DCI is on his side. And blood will flow - but more on the side of the brutes, the bad ones. And when the LAW of Scotland would not touch the culprits of the baddest kind imaginable from Law, Church, Police, Parliament, High and Mighties - not only from Glasgow, but all over the country - there will be other... solutions. And Quiet Tommy Quaid can finally rest in peace...
And Lennox? Let's see what the highly capable and renown author Craig Russel will let us know about him. I can say - it is a real pleasure to know him - and his friend Tommy, too.
A really hard-boiled thriller that is the chronicle of a revenge. Not only for ONE person - but for the many innocent ones that have been heavily abused over a lot of years. In the surroundings that should have protected them - and by the people who had the plain responsibility of their psycho- physical well-being, their education and their future life. I had not an ounce, nor a ton of compassion for the perpetrators and their thugs. Because ... if you live by the sword, you should be prepared to die by the sword. But it is also very impressive to follow the moral changes in Lennox' soul and the resulting behavior. Absolutely to recommend and fully worth its price - only 0,99 Eurocent I had to pay! A real bargain!!!

Really Good Latest, But Hopefully Not Last, of the Lennox Series

Craig Russell can really write. I read and enjoyed the entire Lennox series, with the The Quiet Death of Thomas Quaid being my favorite. If you are into literate, pretty darkish, hard boiled Scottish PI crime then this series is well worth your time, best to read them in order. I am a huge fan of Rankin's Rebus books set in Edinburgh , the Lennox series is a nice companion piece set in the more gritty environs of Glasgow. Rankin motivated me to make the trek from SF to Edinburgh (twice and well worth it), now Glasgow's on the list thanks to Russell's excellent series.
