Iggulden doesn't quite match the Master's consistency, but the humour is less patronising and the plot rattles along rather than getting bogged down in Woodhouse's tendency to over-indulge himself.
A great story which moves along at a tidy pace - and written in a way which will keep you smiling, and even elicit an occasional chuckle.
Yes, it is only a quick read, and the plot is really quite ridiculous; but for me that only added to it's charm and quirkiness. Albert Rossi, is a character that most middle-aged men can identify with, and his misadventures made me laugh out loud. For some reason I kept imagining him as the dapper David Niven.
I love Mr Iggulden's work, he is my favourite author; and although I have enjoyed reading all of his historical novels, this little gem was a welcome change to my usual choice of read.
More please sir!
The book is not very well written and the humour and plot is very predictable; short stories work best when they are sharply written and end with a twist / surprise - this book has neither. I could imagine this being written by a good English pupil asked to write a spy spoof for their homework.
Having said all of that, it is only £1.99 and is short enough to be worth a read but don't have your expectations too high - no laugh out loud moments just a few wry smiles.
Hope this helps...
Well worth a read .. took me at least partway through a sleepless night.
