From the Editor
Like millions of readers around the world, I’ve long been a fan of Patricia Cornwell’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta, who ushered forensic science into popular culture and became a literary role model for a generation. With Quantum, Cornwell introduces us to a captivating new heroine for the twenty-first century in the kickoff to an of-the-moment series that will change the way we think about cybertechnology and space science.
A brilliant physicist, keen-eyed NASA investigator, fearless pilot, and aspiring astronaut, Captain Calli Chase is in many ways a spiritual heir to Scarpetta. She’s also a twin, and the mystery that fuels this story centers around the whereabouts and potentially sinister activities of her sister, Carme, a decorated military officer who also aspires to the stars. In trying to clear her sister’s name, Calli will be forced to reckon with secrets from her past as well as a vast conspiracy that puts national security in jeopardy.
A high-stakes thriller that blends groundbreaking technology, complex twists, and a compelling emotional story, Quantum launches us into the world of Captain Chase at Mach speed, with a cliffhanger ending that left me eagerly awaiting the sequel, Spin, which releases next summer. I can’t wait to see where Patricia takes us then.

"The creator of Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta peers into space and finds just as much skullduggery there...[introducing] an equally strong, even more tormented heroine...[in] federal special agent Capt. Calli Chase." --Kirkus Reviews
"Move over, Doctor Kay Scarpetta...Quantum inaugurates a new series with a confident new heroine..." --The Telegraph
"Cornwell's long-time fans will recognize her talent for jumping immediately into action. From page one, the reader is drawn into the space and time of the characters, as Cornwell wastes no time getting the reader oriented into the story. The claustrophobic confines of the opening setting are fantastically described, to the point that readers may have to remind themselves to breathe normally." --The Nerd Daily
"Brilliantly crafted, gripping, and smart..." --Post Register
"Buckle up for a race to the finish that does not disappoint." --Bookreporter
"As always, Cornwell establishes time, place, and mood by expertly crafting each scene to make you feel as if you're in it." --New York Journal of Books
"Gripping, suspenseful, and leaves you wanting more." --Better Reading

I made it through the incoherent prologue. But it it provided no understanding or motivation for what would follow. So I gave it a rest.
I made it through the first two chapters, just. But it only got worse, with an excruciatingly slow flow of actual information, and no plot development, and little character development. just tedious and juvenile exchanges between the PoV character and a secondary who really shouldn't have been there.
And then I gave up and removed it from my device. I don't expect to try this author again.
To say that I was disappointed with the book is to say nothing. I picked a Patricia Cornwell book after years of abstinence. Her previous books were so masterfully written that they left too much of an impact on me, they were rather gruesome and I started having difficulties sleeping after reading them. This time I had nothing apart from boredom and annoyance. The book is so overdrawn, and mostly reads as an educational material written for kids. There is no real suspense or drama, but long-winded description of "science" and "technology". If I wanted those, I would've picked up a book written by a subject matter expert. I just finished reading the book only to try to get to the end of the story and guess what, there was none. Would I ever pick a Captain Chase book again? No way!!! If I could I would've given less than one star
Clearly a money grab so you will buy the second one. It's just a load of internal monologue and space talk, some of it relevant and the rest just useless. The book that could have been 50 pages!
I had to skim read parts of the boring stuff to get to any story. Would suggest leaving this one!
when I saw this book was written by Patricia Cornwall I thought it would be really good like her other books. It is the most confusing book that I have ever read, and I would not purchase any more in this series
(Amazon First Reads – Sep 2019.) I read this on an early edition of Kindle so did not have the (at/distraction?) of the animation or video, etc. As I have not read any of Patricia Cornwell’s books before, I can’t compare this novel with her earlier works as so many reviewers of this book have. I can say that she is an accomplished writer (even before I read the “About the Author” section). To me there was too much musing by Captain Calli Chase, too much descriptive content (though that was well done). The story finally gathered pace in the latter stages and was quite engrossing as the various leads previously scattered were gathered together but not tied down as this was quite obviously the first of a series of books. I did enjoy the science and NASA parts of the book. I would recommend this to those who like the author to delve deeply into the characters who populate a story.
This is a book that ricochets you into the world of space. The graphics are unique & cutting edge. Im sure if I visited the NASA Langley Campus after reading this book I would have a feeling of deja vu. Captain Chase is a character whose inner world seems to be one of turmoil but she still manages to exude a aura of external calm. She is a very believable, compassionate protagonist. Im so glad this is the start of a fantastic new Patricia Cornwell Series. Ive already pre ordered Spin.
If you are looking for a thriller along the Scarpetta lines this is very different. At times I had no idea what was going on and with all the acronyms and technical terms I nearly gave up reading it. It seemed like she had to use all the new terms she probably learnt during the book research- way too much detail and it loses you. Sorry but I won’t be buying more in thi series
