I've owned a few sticks in the past like a Madcatz USFIV TE, an old PS3 qanba and a few custom made sticks. This beats them all in terms of quality. I can not emphasise enough how well built this stick is. The Chassis housing the components is made out of solid aluminium. The top is covered by a thick sheet of piano black plexiglass. Having used this stick almost everyday for the past few weeks, the top panel holds up very well and you will not feel it bend over time and you won't hear any squeaking between the plexiglass and aluminium layer. The rest of the chassis is made out of high quality plastic and the bottom of the chassis is metal with rubber padding so that it feels comfortable on the lap and will not move. In short, the Dragon's Chassis is beautiful and can take any abuse you throw at it.
This stick uses Sanwa joystick and buttons. Considered by most to be the standard in fightstick components, the sanwa stick and buttons are highly responsive making them one of if not the best stick and buttons on the market. By default, the stick comes with a square gate for the stick/ lever. I had no problems pulling moves and combos in games like Street Fighter V and King of Fighter XIV.
If you want to change or mod the stick and buttons, doing so is incredibly easy. All you do is press the two buttons on the underside of the top panel and the top panel, supported by sturdy metal hinges with equally sturdy springs, easily opens up. Simply unscrew and remove the perspex cover and you can switch out all the components. The interior is beautiful. The wiring is so neat as the wiring has been braided and all the wires are colour coded to the buttons. There's a small chart showing you which wire colour corresponds to which button. The bottom of the compartment is lined with chrome keeping a silver piece of fabric with dragon scale patterns in place. Despite the large physical side of the stick, the compartment space is small, so don't expect to fit a blu-ray case inside. There is enough space to keep some spare parts and tools.
The leds are a cool edition. You can set them up so that they activate when a button is pressed, to respond to vibrations, keep them on at all times or switch them off. You also have L3, R3, Options and Share buttons on the very top of the panel with a touchpad underneath that. Using the stick on PC and PS3 is easy. Simply toggle a switch.
This feature needs it's own paragraph. This stick has a headset jack. That's right. You can use your favourite headphones and headset with this stick. It feels sturdy in it's build quality.
In the end, If you're in the market for a premium stick. This is the one to get. Quality build with quality parts. It feels incredibly responsive. It is pricy, but I do feel you get what you pay for with this stick. It's easy to maintain, switch or mod components. Despite it's weight, it feels incredibly comfy on your lap. If you're playing with it on your lap or on a table this thing isn't going to move around. It's a looker too.
As for aesthetics, it looks amazing. Very sleek and shiny. It has several LED options. It might look a little too "extra" but that's because the stick at heart is very "extra". You can pop it open with two button presses and the interior is the cleanest I've ever seen. It's almost as if it were meant to be showcased. I certainly appreciate and might even prefer the cleaner/simpler look of the Qanba Obsidian, but my nerdy side also loves the high tech look of the dragon.
The overall build is just quality. It doesn't feel like it would break easily. The USB cord/cable is braided and has the two brackets to tie around. There's also a standard 3.5mm audio jack. The interior is incredibly easy to access for modding. It really seems like the stick was made to impress in every single category.
While the dimensions are exactly where I want them to be, I must say that it can also be a hassle for some. The size makes it difficult to fit in most standard size backpacks. My best advice would be to get a backpack/bag/joystick bag that you can carry it in. This thing is heavy especially if you're expecting to be able to carry it for extended periods of time. Not only can you get tired, but dropping it probably wont be pretty because of its size and weight. It's a nice product and at the top of it's class. Treat it like so and get a bag.
Other than that, if you're like me and prefer to pay extra for the best quality, then the Qanba Dragon is for you.
The Qanban Dragon is excellent straight out of the box. Most people mod the gate to octagonal. It comes with a square gate. Most professional players use a square gate. I just changed my playing style to the square gate. It actually requires less movement to produce a fire ball. With an octagonal gate it is probably easier to produce a fire ball but it takes more time because you touch the corners of the gate. In fighting games timing is everything. So if I can produce moves in less time that is an advantage. So I kept the square gate that comes with the arcade stick. Before you switch to an octagonal gate try to play with the square gate to see if you can adapt. If you can adapt I would not change it.
They do not make this stick for xbox one. So I got a brook PS3/PS4 to xbox one adapter. This adapters work well but they are $45 plus. I hope brook will make a PS3/PS4 to snes classic adapter. So right now I can use this stick for my PS3, PS4 and my xbox one.
Bottom line this is basically the best stick you can get out of the box. It is expensive but worth it. It has good weight and designed well. I plan on getting another one in the future especially if the price goes down.
