This is a gorgeous friends-to-lovers story that ends in heartbreak... and I'm so very thankful that Grace and Asher's story is continued in Fighting For Us! These two deserve a HEA!!
I love Grace. I loved her in the Miles series and I love her still... probably more now. She really does live up to the meaning of her name. Her gentle, caring nature is endearing, and her tenacity and gumption make me want to fist bump Cooper or Logan... or Gram. (Speaking of which, Gram better still be alive in the next book!)
And Asher. I foresee a very rough path in store in the next book (If the title isn't a dead giveaway!) but I hold my hope for that happy ending while he navigates the pain. He was so sweet in this book. Yeah, he had some issues, but he had a heart of gold. That's promise alone that he'll make it through the other side. I'm already hurting for him and how prison will harden him... just know we love you, Asher! You can do it!
Only a few days until Book 2! 🥳
Once again we are introduced to Characters to come in the rest of the series, and the connecting story of the town feud and its mysterious secret.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series.
Spoken In: Dual Perspectives - Asher/Grace
Rating: 5 Stars ⭐️
Protecting You is a short little novella and that start of Claire Kinsleys brand new series Bailey Brothers . Its a spin off to her amazing Miles Family series. You don't have to read that series to read this one but I would highly recommend it because its brilliant and we are first introduced to Grace Miles!
This little prequel introduces us to Grace and Asher as well as a bunch of new characters and gives us a little preview into their relationship growing up and how the the ended up were they are now. I've been dying for Grace and Ashers story since we meet her in the Miles Family series I needed to know all the things about this couple!
I absolutely loved this little glimpse into their past, I went through so many emotions reading this book to be crushed with that ending. This does end on a mild cliffhanger but Fighting For Us the second part to their story isn't far behind!

So, we start with Asher Bailey… he’s been in love with Grace, the girl next door his whole life. They have been inseparable most of their childhood but have never dated. They’ve dated other people, particularly when they both went to college, but it never felt right. It’s like they always knew deep down that their hearts belonged to each other.
At 21, Asher is a year away from finishing college. He has his whole career mapped out. He wants to be a Firefighter, then rise through the ranks. He just needs to keep his nose clean so that he can get in.
When a 20 year old Grace returns from WSU for the summer, Asher suddenly realises that she is what is missing from his future. In a bid to resolve it he sets out to win her over. But does she feel the same?
The other thing is his brothers. The oldest of five boys, Asher and his brothers are close following the death of their parents. They’ve lived with Gram ever since. She’s a wise and wonderful old lady and is always the pillar of strength and giver of the best advice. The trouble is, all the brothers are extremely protective of Grace. She’s like the sister they never had. Would they approve of Asher taking his relationship with Grace to next level?
Of course, he needn’t have worried because the brothers are in full support of this new development and give the couple their full support.
Everything is going according to plan. They’re all loved up and planning their future together, but a tragedy befalls this beautiful couple and their whole future together is thrown into turmoil. With the whole family rallying round to show their support, Asher can’t help but feel lost and defeated. He must face the reality that his plans for him and Grace and their long and happy life together are over.
But Grace won’t give up on the man she loves. She waited her whole life for him… and as much as he tries to push her away and to face life without him, Grace is not going to let him go.
This story broke me… I’m devastated. I mean, I know these romance stories have twists and turns but this twist floored me. I’d already fallen in love with this fabulous couple. They are so perfectly suited, but it’s a real “life’s a b*#ch” moment that my heart just plummeted.
Once again, as always with Kingsley’s books, it’s well written and therefore easy to read. She always writes with heart and feeling, and her characters and circumstances are relatable and believable.
I feel like I live every moment with these characters. The emotions, the ups, the downs, highs, lows… it’s so consuming.
So, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. But have the tissues ready… it’s not an easy ride. I’m hoping book 2 cheers me up a bit.
This story is sweet, full of love with a few bits of angst thrown in. Could not put this book down. Can't wait to read the conclusion of Asher and Grace's story.
Ashers brothers are amazing characters and I can't wait to read more of them when they get their own books. (Hint hint Claire Kingsley!!)
Also, the Miles family make an appearance which was awesome (loved their books too!!)
All in all, loved this story from beginning to end.
I will say though, that u really like these characters, there's no nonsense, no hidden secrets, they're just nice people who you'd want to hang out with!!
Can't wait to read more about Asher's brothers, I think they'd be a series on their own!!
please note, this ends on a cliffhanger! Not so much that it's not knowing what's going to happen, you do! It's just a waiting game - read it, you won't regret it!!
