Reviews to add to Project Amber:
It starts with a bang and the reader’s attention is arrested from the very first page with the intense action. But there is no slowing down, as the author leads the reader from one fascinating page to the next gripping one, each page filled with well-crafted scenes, great dialogues, and awesome descriptions.

“Milestone: Project Amber” by Carl Lakeland is a fascinating suspense novel with a mix of military intrigue and science fiction (or is it already reality? Who knows what they hide from us?) As for the story itself, I found it well-written and felt it was a quick read because it kept my interest from the beginning until the end.
~ Maranda Russell
The Milestone Incident by Carl Lakeland is a powerful thriller that melds the elements of suspense and crime fiction to give readers a tremendous ride. Carl Lakeland takes readers across beautiful landscapes and well-documented Australian settings to follow the story of a compelling woman poised against a complex and powerful enemy.
Project Amber: The Milestone Incident is intelligently plotted, brilliantly imagined with compelling characters, and executed to a great and triumphant finish. You can’t stop reading until the very last page.

Milestone: Project Amber is an excellent suspense/mystery drama novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I can confidently say anyone else would too. It's a well thought out plot, developed and believable characters, and excellent writing all in one book.

Strap on your seat belt and hold on tight because you’re in for a helluva ride! Project Amber: The Milestone Incident by Carl Lakeland sucks you in from the very first page and doesn’t let up. There’s a nice balance between the narrative, dialogue and the action. The story is fast-paced and hard to peg into a particular genre as it is part military thriller and part sci-fi. There are many plot twists to this story and, while too many plot twists can confuse readers and ultimately lose them, that’s not the case here. Project Amber: The Milestone Incident delivers what it promises – a great story from beginning to end!

We have a strong female lead who (to first give a nod to a trope not averted) admittedly has the usual tragic backstory, but this is neither all-consuming not distracting; it simply explains her absent parents and sets up a family mystery arc. Whether the dead father returns or not remains to be seen, as this is the first book in a trilogy, and it is stealth sci-fi; that is to say it stars as a spy / war story, and becomes more and more sci-fi as we progress, with the addition of extra-terrestrials and advanced technologies.
As for Angel, the protagonist, she’s strong, but she’s not a quasi-flawless Mary-Sue either, and she’s as likely to screw up or not as any other character. We learn very little about her looks and we aren’t hit with a stack of informed abilities rivaling James Bond.
In Angel we also have a broadly lesbian main character who’s neither sexualized nor tokenized, and who certainly isn’t there for voyeuristic titillation or stereotyping. It just happens to be her orientation.
There are a lot of plot twists, and if the book has any unnatural feel to it that’d be worth mentioning in the category of criticism, it’s that sometimes important plot-changing events will happen over the course of a paragraph and be at most obliquely referenced elsewhere. This author definitely doesn’t over-explain things. I like that, because life can be like that and it adds realism, but not everyone will. I’d also mention that for an author who ostensibly (from his bio) has no military experience, it was well-researched enough that I wondered while reading, as only a couple of small things suggested gaps in knowledge of military kit or procedures, and they could have just been artistic licence (and less so that most fictional works not written by ex-military folks).
All in all, a great book well-written.
What would any of us do if on one day we received a letter in which there are some nasty and dark secrets from our past, something we thought that they are ‘safely hidden’ in the void of the past? What would we do? We all have some secrets, something we desperately want to forget and left behind, because that is how we deal with secrets most of the time. The same thing happened to our heroine. With no other choice but to ‘obey’ by the letter, she did what she had to do. The very first thing that I liked about this novel is that it immediately opens with something ‘strongly’ mysterious. I like it because that is what kept me reading for some time until I discovered the depth of the plot, but regardless of that some things will be left undiscovered until the very end of the plot.
Okay, so we have a limited time to stop some mysterious project and if we do not it will be the end of the world as we know it. That is fantastic, when it comes to a story of a novel, because it almost guarantees everything we all want to read about in novels of this genre: race with time, danger possibly around every corner, reminiscing the past and the ‘good ol’ days’ when everything seems to be slowly fading away… One needs to know how to put all this and more into a piece of paper in order for this to become a decent read. And “Project Amber’’ is definitely a decent read. To be honest, it is a lot more than that
MILESTONE: Project Amber: A Suspense Novel is a work of genius, well-plotted and executed with the deftness of a master’s touch. The reader is literally absorbed as they follow the awesome, unforgettable characters. The writing leaps off the pages with authority and grace, singing like a symphony into the ears of the readers. This is a stunning opening for a series and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
