This is by far my favorite book of the series. I have the final one to read yet, but Max and Violet's story has been building since book 1.
Max Baldwin is a former soldier who has an architectural business with his best friend and former brother-in-arms Tucker Buchanan from the first book. Violet Richardson is the 3rd woman of Elegance and Lace, a wedding business. Max and Violet have been having verbal foreplay since this series began. Both are strong-willed, stubborn individuals who say it like it is.
When Violet is kidnapped from a wedding, Max takes it upon himself to rescue her. Though Reed's (from book 2) is the bad guy after the 3 British rubies, it's his henchman Alex who is in the spotlight of this book. Alex is ruthless and cold and gleefully likes to "play with his prey." However, Max isn't the expected foe he bargained for when Max does what Max does best: blows up stuff. To rescue Violet, Max literally blows up part of the house she's held in the rescue her. From there, they are on a non-stop adventure to get away from the man who wants to kill them.
Still bantering and rubbing each other the wrong way, as they've done for a year now, my favorite line in the book is from Max when he's trying to help Violet jump on a moving train to make their escape. "And don’t be mad when I squeeze your ass." Max can't even understand it himself why he's the one who had to rescue her, and rescue her alone. When they finally agree all their sparring has been leading up to sex, even Max comes right out and says all this verbal fighting has been foreplay.
When they finally come together, it felt realistic. She has a very painful past and just doesn't believe in happy-ever-after, which is an oxymoron issue since her business is wedding planning...something Max points out to her. These two seem to be able to read each other. Max knows there's something in her past that has her love gun shy. She confesses it. Max takes quite a bit longer to finally open up to her on why he'w the way he is.
I like Max as the best hero of the series simply because he's honest. He says it like it is. Doesn't hold back. He's got some baggage, as does Violet; so when he comes to realize he's actually fallen in love, he still feels he's too damaged to really be in her life. Though that takes maybe 2 paragraphs from the thought to changing his mind to occur, it still felt honest.
The book also doesn't lose sight of the couples created from the first 2 books in this series. You can see their relationships grow as well. And, we are introduced to Knox, the hero in the next and final book in the series. He's written to come across as someone you don't like, so it'll be interesting to see what his real story is in the final book.
The ending of this book I saw coming 3/4 of the way through this one. I knew it was going to be an ending, just thought it might be the one for the final book. I look forward to reading the final book so I can see just how the author is going to keep this story going.
This book was definitely a page-turner filled with action and a realistic couple and their romance.
