From the Author
Jane Child took over my life.
One morning I sat down to write a new novel. I decided to try something different. For years I’d read about writers like Lee Child and Ian Rankin who sit down at a blank screen and say to themselves, “I wonder what Jack Reacher / Inspector Rebus is up to today ...” and just start typing.
I couldn’t possibly do that, I’d told myself. So just once, just for fun, I tried it. No prep, no planning. I simply sat down and started writing.
And Jane was there. Right from the very first word. It was weird, eerie and remarkable.
Over the next seven weeks, I learned a lot more about Jane. She had me hooked on her situation and her story. I couldn’t wait to get back to my desk each day to find out what would happen next.
I finished the book in a white heat. Convinced it must be rubbish, I printed out a copy and threw it in a drawer.
Months later, I took it out again, gritted my teeth, and had another look, braced for badness. But it wasn’t bad. In fact, it was bloody good. It had me glued to the text and turning the pages – and I’d written it!
So after a couple of quick revisions, still a bit dazed at what I’d done, I tried it on my indomitable beta readers – and they loved it too!
So here she is: Jane Child. What do you think ...?
