The characters are much more real and plausible than in the average work of erotica, and it takes a little longer to get going in consequences while the author is setting the scene, but the fact that you can believe in the main characters and most of their actions and imagine these people actually existing instead of just being picture-postcard perfect makes the erotic tension all the more powerful.
As the story opens the heroine, Rachel Delaney, is just coming up to forty and recently divorced after seventeen years of marriage. She is struggling to cope with money problems, the relationship with her teenage sons who spend a week with her and a week with her ex, and re-starting a career after years as a home-maker. She is also frustrated and lonely.
Then at the supermarket she meets Rand, a tall and almost impossibly handsome single man a few years her senior who has just moved into the area and to whom she is incredibly attracted, so she does something completely out of character: she starts a passionate affair on a no-last names, no commitment basis, in which they just enjoy one another on the weeks her sons are with her ex-husband.
At first it seems too good to be true. In fact so good that only the fact that she keeps telling herself that both of them just want fantastic sex, not a relationship, because she is desperately afraid of getting hurt again if she starts to care, enables Rachel to keep things on that level.
Until the day when Rachel and her ex are asked to come into the school their sons attend, to meet the new Principal (American for Head teacher). Rachel's son Nathan has got in with the wrong crowd at school, there has been some trouble, and the Principal needs to talk to Nathan's parents. Rachel gets the shock of her life when she and her ex-husband arrive at the Principal's office - to find that Principal Rand Torvik is the man she's been having an anonymous fling with.
(BTW That isn't a spoiler as this plot detail is clearly indicated on the back cover of the book.)
What happens now? You'll have to read the book to find out.
Some good humour in the book - not as funny as the romantic comedies the author writes under the name Jennifer Skully such as Drop Dead Gorgeous but quite amusing in places. And if you have read and enjoyed the other erotic romances which she has written or contributed to such as Twin Peaks (Berkley Sensation) or More Than A Night you will probably like this.
Some of the characters' tastes are on the kinky side and one or two of their actions later in the book are things nobody in their right mind would risk doing in the real world, which doesn't mean you can't enjoy fantasising about them.
Apparently aimed at women but with enough sympathy for the male perspective that it is quite possible for male readers to enjoy this book too.
Oh boy and what they get up to in different locations are as varied as the wild abandoned sex they indulge in. Rand is determined to fulfill all of Rachel's fantasies, he does that and more.
I loved this book there is a real story here, a woman who has been married for twenty years, suddenly out in the world on her own finding her way. Certainly not very experienced with men, then along comes Rand and pushes her to her limits not that she doesn't love it. But as they grow closer the reader gets to see the changes in Rachel's life her growing confidence, actually standing up for herself. How she deals with her idiot of an ex-husband, all this and more was here. Beautifully written by this author. A wonderful read.
It's a good story as explained by the other reviews. I liked how they conducted their relationship and there is lots of sex in various places and various forms!
I haven't read the other two in the series as I was waiting for the price to go down but they sound darker than this one.
I would recommend it, but not at this price. If you can buy it used it's worth it.

This was a rather good book. I enjoyed it, it was hot, and there was also some nice characterization.
I liked Rachel. She is struggling with her two sons, newly divorced and trying to stay nice with her ex-husband, and then accidentally forming a relationship with her son’s principal. She flounders a few times, but I like where she stood by the end, what she decided to do for herself, along with her relationship with her sons getting better. And I definitely like how she stood up to her ex-husband.
Rachel and Rand are definitely hot together. I felt that they really were getting to a place where they could have a real relationship together, along with Rand getting along with her children. And the sex was really nice; kinky, with variety, some roleplay and voyeuristic stuff.
This was an all-around good book. I liked the characters and their growth, and I liked the sexy stuff. I look forward to reading something else by Haynes.
All the books in the series are very unique, loosely related- so they can be read as stand-alones and treat difficult subjects with tact: the death of a child, cancer and now bully.
The sexy storylines are almost a bonus.
I liked that the characters in "TTPO" were real adults going through difficult choices and facing very day-to-day problems, such as sullen teenagers and school violence.
I liked that the main character, Rachel, was strong and vulnerable.
The chemestry between her and the hero, Rand, is real and touching.
The difficulties they face made them very ordinary and yet, the reader could still cheer for them and feel the sexiness of their encounters.
With a principal like that, who would not want to be sent to the principal's office??
