Fallon is a hotheaded, passionate, and opinionated person. She will do everything she can to defend the English cause. It is no surprise that she feels strongly about all Normans, but especially Count Alaric. Alaric is a well educated, fierce warrior and Norman knight who is sworn to the service of Duke William. No one has defeated Alaric in battle and he has constantly been at war. Both William and Alaric are seen as lacking given their family parental background. Duke William, wants one thing above anything else; to become King of England. He claims that Harold promised that he, William would be deemed the current king's successor. William is so angered by what he deems a slight when he is not chosen but Harold instead by the English group that is charged with the responsibility to make the decision that he goes to war against England to gain the throne. That group elevates Harold to be king despite the fact that he did not want it. Regardless, he must fight William. His daughter, Fallon stands by her father even on the battlefield. Fallon (although disguised) is often in the midst of the bloody gore, injury and death that occurs on the battlefield. In one instance Alaric comes upon her and saves her life.
There is so much more to this fascinating story but I will not give away the remaining plot. Edith, Harold's wife and Fallon's mother offers her daughter advice about many things including Harold's feelings about Alaric and the type of man Alaric is. Does Fallon follow the advice? There is pain for Alaric and two key people are at the heart of it: Morwenna and Lenora. Who are they and what happens? You may wish to determine what happens when Alaric and Fallon come face-to-face on the battlefield. Who is Eric Ulfson? If he fights for England, what prize does he demand? Father Damien plays a significant role in the book. What is it? Delon, a long time admirer of Fallon, is betrothed to the fiery Fallon by Harold before Harold dies on the battlefield. Do they marry and live happily ever after? Finally you might wonder who is Edgar Atheling and what role does he play with regard to England and the crown? I thoroughly enjoy Heather Graham's books. I definitely put this book among the very best she has done when it comes to historical romance and I have others of hers on my Kindle and in paperback to read!
