Product description

Product Description

For centuries the people of Ollghum Keep relied on the knights of the Green Order to protect them from the horrors of the haunted wood. Now, as before, a monstrous army marches on their small town. But this time, the Green Order is nowhere to be found.

The Bishop sends the priest Heden into the wood, to find out why. Arriving at their secret priory, Heden discovers their commander is dead, the remaining knights paralyzed with despair. They will not act, they will not tell him what happened, and with each hour the monstrous army gets closer to Ollghum Keep. Thousands will die if the priest fails.

When the knights start dying one by one, Heden must race to unravel the conspiracy of silence and save the knights from themselves so they can save the people they were sworn to guard.

This book has fallen into it's own special personal category. I'm not a re-reader - for most books, one read-through is enough - but there are a few books that get a second go around. I read The Stand whenever I have a particularly terrible flu, and there are some old books I re-read when enough years have passed for me to forget most of the filling and be delighted all over again.

This book, I think I could sit down and re-read it tomorrow and be perfectly happy.

The story chases along a series of deaths and mysteries, slowly uncovering characters and their histories and the world they live in. In a way, the complex bloodied path it follows towards the truth reminds me of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco - both murder mystery and historical tragedy. But instead of monks there are Green Knights, and instead of a curious Franciscan friar and his apprentice, there's a guy with PTSD and a magic sword.

There are a few typos, but on the whole the book is extremely well written. I loved the balance of action, thought and dialogue. I felt no need to skip lengthy descriptive passages or boring inner monologues because they weren't there. But neither did I feel too rushed through the story to stop and appreciate the situation or feel anything for the characters. Having read books that fall into those categories lately - too fast or too slow - I can appreciate how hard it is to find that balance.

The characters also seemed very real to me - Vanora and Heden in particular. They don't act the way we expect them to, at least not at first, because we don't know them well enough yet. Their motivations aren't dumped out all at once just because the reader gets to see their thoughts sometimes.

An obscenely good book. I wish there were libraries already set in this world. Dialogue is wonderfully written, it has that confidence I've only seen a few times, where a fantasy writer knows they'll get their point across more emphatically by NOT using flowery, arcane language. Every time two people met I felt like the writing revealed so much more about their inner workings than their verbal exchange let on. And people speak exactly like this world's been growing up around them since before they were born. It feels real and lived in. Priest was a pleasure to read and I need to know more about Heden. Really glad there's a follow up but next week I'm going to be upset there isn't yet a third book.

Once I started reading I could hardly put it down.

Colville has a very direct writing style which is both refreshing and very enjoyable to read.

I definitely recommend to all fans of fantasy.
