The stories from the various characters felt real. I felt like I even knew some of them.
Maybe thats because the characters represented the "everyman," or the "the girl next door." There was something about this book that spoke to me, about whats going on in our relationships, our economies not just in America but in the West in general.
This read was at times dark, edgy and bold in its message. It is definitely for the reader who sees things for what they are and not for what we have been told. The expectation is in the title for sure. For a lot of people this book won't make sense because a lot of people see the world through rose coloured glasses. This book will make you think if you want to, and it will also entertain you. It is a close read but can also be a fun read as there is slices of humour in every story. The author touches on some interesting theories and topics that most would likely shy away from. There is a ton of commentary laced over the stories which causes you to pause and reflect about the world and maybe even your own life which i found to be the best strength of this read.
It is a bold book. The fiction felt real.

This was an exceptional first go-around for the author. While each chapter reads as a separate tale about some forlorn and lost American, you get a strong sense of all the characters somehow being tied together. This is achieved through a consistent expression of themes throughout the book. Everyone is trying to "find themselves", or if they had already found themselves, they were figuring how they got there. Each chapter weaves seamlessly into the next and you get a sense of familiarity with some of the characters, and the life they've come to live. The descriptions are so good you want to know what happens next - is everyone going to be ok? The tone the book has suggests that may not be the case, but you are still intrigued nonetheless. A promising start - we should all be eagerly awaiting what the author has in store next!
