Product Description

Live each day as if it were your last. Worry only about yourself. Work hard and never, ever fall in love. That’s Olivia Buchanan’s motto and she stands by it every day.
Feisty, headstrong and confident, recent graduate Liv is fighting to succeed in the male dominated field she has chosen as her career. As an architect for her best friend's father's respected London based company, her chance to shine and become recognised comes when she lands the prestigious account for GO Sports and Leisure.
Armed with her plans and determination, Liv is ready to deliver the presentation of her life. That is, until he walks in. The mysterious personal trainer from the gym. The only man to have ever made her heart flutter. But he isn't all he seems.
When MMA fighter, Nathan Oakes offers Liv a business proposition to join him in Southern France, she’s left questioning his motives and wonders if she should refuse. She’s also equally intrigued by the prospect of what the trip could do for her career.
Liv has no time for a relationship. Nate doesn’t want one. When forced to live side by side, feelings are stretched and emotions are battled. Can they keep their professional and personal lives separate, preventing them from falling into something they both need to avoid?

This is the first book of this author’s that I have read and I have to say ‘I found a diamond in the rough.’ I feel like just writing a review of ‘this is a great read – you need it on your list’ but I would be disappointed in myself if I did that.
Within minutes of starting this book, I was hooked. Fighter story! TICK! Witty writing – HUGE TICK! Fast paced, tension, drama, character development – tickety, tick, TICK!
I appreciate that it’s hard to not fall into the trappings of stereotypes especially when it comes to a female lead that’s not a stick figure. I don’t just mean in the physical sense but also the emotional and mental sense. EJ touches on them but she doesn’t delve, if anything, she empowers Olivia to face her fears and get the job done.
Olivia is an instantly likeable character. She’s on the cusp of her career launching to the stratosphere when cruel comments that echo the sentiments of her own thoughts send her confidence plummeting. Nathan Oakes comes into her world and it’s never going to be the same. They strike up a friendship first and foremost that quickly develops into something so much more for both of them.
There were some frustrations within this read from the characters and their behaviour. I’ve made it very clear in other reviews that the mindset of characters that say ‘I want you but I can’t allow myself to have you, therefore no one else can either’ sends me into a rage that nearly ends up with me smashing the phone. I won’t lie. This did have me exhaling through my nose like a bull but it quickly moved past that and I was able to let it go.
There are some moments where I was bent over laughing, there were other moments where I related all too well with Olivia. I love the nickname and picked up on its meaning instantly.

This is a gripping journey of discovering self-worth, learning to trust and putting your heart on the line.
Liv is a strong, feisty leading lady who I instantly connected and identified with. She knows what she wants and she goes for it but is there something missing in her career fuelled life?
Nathan is a hot, focused gym owner. What lies beneath that sculptured, hard exterior and what is it he really wants from Liv?
The sexual chemistry sizzles off the pages and the story carries you along, cocooning you in their world and keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Another fantastic book from this fabulous author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love is worth fighting for. 11 July 2015

I must confess that I am new to E.J. Shortall's writing. But after reading Prepared to Fight, I'm adding her other books to my TBR list. I fell head over heels for this book. I could not Put. It. Down. The characters are so well written that it's impossible not to love them. And I love them because I connected with them on so many levels. I could definitely see myself in Olivia. While I'm not an architect, I do work in a male dominated field and I understand the challenges she faced based on gender.

I also loved that she was curvy, smart, and sassy. She changed her lifestyle not because she felt obligated, but because she wanted to be healthier. She wanted to be a better version of herself without losing the essence that made her her.

Umm, and who wouldn't jump at the chance to have a former MMA star as your personal trainer? Yes, please. Where do I sign up? But underneath the muscles lies a wounded heart. Circumstances have caused Nate to close his heart and only offer a physical connection. He has no need or want of an emotional connection and that suits Liv just fine because she's married to her career.

But what happens when these two lost souls find each other? A beauty of a book that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting more.

Prepared to Fight has quickly catapulted itself on to my favorites of 2015 list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 29 August 2015

It was a good story, and I can't believe I am going to say this, but it seemed long. I felt like there were a few chapters that dragged.
Olivia in an architect working at her best friend's father's firm.
She gets assigned to a big project for a sports company. After a run in with a mean girl wannabe, she lets her bestie drag her to the gym. There she meets a very attractive guy she thinks is just a personal trainer. But to her surprise is none other than the owner, Nathan Oaks.
Nathan finds her to be an intriguing breath of fresh air. She is sassy and opinonated, and the best part is she doesn't know who he is. Which is a famous MMA fighter.
Their relationship takes off despite both of them claiming they don't want one.
But with outside influences, and Nate training for another fight, will they be able to make it?
All right, the part that took a little away from their relationship for me, Nate was still hung up on his dead fiance. I think Liv discounted that fact to easily. Yes he said he loved Liv, but I think he still had some work to do with dealing with Lou's death.

1.0 out of 5 stars did i read the same book as everyone else ?? 12 September 2015

Nate is a A $ $ ........threw the ENTIRE book, he uses Olivia simply as a vessel to use when he needs a release....then all of a sudden at the end of the book they are "so in love and getting married" ?@??@??

Nate was a heartless jerk !!! He cared more about preparing for his fight, he ignored Olivia unless it suited his physical whims aka his sexual release.
Olivia was actually sweet, she was slightly overweight and at first Nate was nice and sweet and was helping her loose weight, then he has the nerve to demand SHE be the one to work on his new build....but all the while he ignores her and then "oh i need to get my own selfish release, im going to go find Olivia"!!

Why would anyone want to read about a heartless selfish jerk who only cares about using a beautiful woman when he is in need of a release.!?!?!
1.0 out of 5 stars This was terrible. Super predictable - "Average" self-deprecating female meets super-sexy 9 November 2015

This was terrible. Super predictable - "Average" self-deprecating female meets super-sexy, super-famous, and super-rich vampire - I mean MMA star who thinks she's just the most flawless creature he's ever seen. *snorts* Kay. He calls her the same stupid nickname far too much and is irrationally jealous for just having met her and not actually admitting feelings for her until like 75% into the book. Which by the way, this girl does just not get. Man, is she dense. She also is super bitchy for no reason quite a bit. I know guys like a challenge, a little sass, but if I met this girl and she acted that way with me there is no way I would pursue her. I did, however, really like the character of Cassie. She's smart and spunky and I appreciate that the author gave her a little more purpose than minor characters typically get. My final comment is that I truly just did not enjoy the writing.. the dialogue seemed off and I did note plenty of grammatical errors.
