Product Description

What do desire and passion have to do with our spiritual journey? According to A. H. Almaas and Karen Johnson, they are an essential part of it.

Conventional wisdom cautions that desire and passion are opposed to the spiritual path—that engaging in desire will take you more into the world, into egoic life. And for most people, that is exactly what happens. We naturally tend to experience wanting in a self-centered way. The Power of Divine Eros challenges the view that the divine and the erotic are separate. When we open to the energy, aliveness, spontaneity, and zest of erotic love, we will find it inseparable from the realm of the holy and sacred. When this is understood, desire and passion become a gateway to wholeness and to realizing our full potential.

The authors reveal how our relationships become opportunities on the spiritual journey to express ourselves authentically, to relate with openness, and to discover dynamic inner realms with another person. Through embodying the energy of eros, each of us can learn to be fully real and alive in all of our interactions.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a Quasar transcript 24 March 2014

Big fan of Ali Hameed's books and the practices and understanding of the Diamond Approach in general, although I don't have the time nor the funds to do more than the one retreat I tried out. So they apparently have an annual retreat that Johnson and Almaas call Quasar retreats that are for the public, especially those involved in other paths who could benefit from the DA's practices and understanding. That's what this book is. One of their public retreats.

I almost gave it three stars because this book is not so much an in depth discussion tantra and eros as it is The Diamond Approach 101 with an emphasis on love, relationships and eros. I was sort of wishing for more in depth discussion on eros as most of what they say about relationships are said elseware in Diamond Approach literature.

What I find great about this book is that Johnson, the other creator of the DA (Faisal was the third), is one of the authors (speakers). Almaas has always seemed like the DA creator and guru because he's the mentally brilliant and sometimes overly hairsplitting author but it was truly Almaas working with Johnson, Maitri, and Faisal who made this approach what it is. It makes him seem less mystified and the DA being more of an organic collaborative creation.

The other great thing is that they outwardly spell out the fundamental practices of the Diamond Approach: Inquiry (simply put and more accessible than the long winded [but still good] previous works on it, the kath meditation (belly focus), and the dyadic inquiry work exactly how I had experienced it on the retreat I went to last year. I would like to note that this peer inquiry was not invented by these teachers, but was created by Claudio Naranjo in the 60's and 70's and he describes his take on it in depth in some of his works. Those involved in the Focusing Method also teach and practice just about the same thing.

I'm happy I have this addition to the DA literature but I kind of wish for another more in depth study of something by Almaas and not just more transcript talks.

Best to read through if you are new to the works of Almaas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Bringing Eros Home 4 October 2013

The wonderment of this new book is how A.H. Almass and Karen Johnson, two strong unique voices seamlessly alternate chapters that delve into the topic of erotic love, giving the reader a taste of the depth and the light they emanate. The book not only presents a teaching, an expanded view on love, but also invites us, through questions and exercises, to enter and explore realms of experience of love that are possible for you, for me, in our relationships, here and now. And that is one of the book's gifts - it is profound and at the same time easy to grasp and bring home, it brings a view that one could say is radical and at the same relevant in this moment, in this relationship, whatever relationship we are in. The book is not for those who read solely from the mind, but for those who love to include the heart as they read, because it is written to both: it begins by opening the mind and inspiring the heart to explore a major split, often painful, most of us carry between the physical and the spiritual. We are invited to sense into the texture of desire, our desire, our passion for union, our experience of the erotic, our experience of the magnetism of love. We all have erotic experiences, how do we hold them, how do we limit them? "Sexy Angel" (the title of one of the chapters) what a freedom!!! Their first book and hopefully not their last!!

Almaas and Johnson do an excellent job in exploring and explaining how desire is a fundamental element in our life. For me it fits into what in the Asian tradition was called Tantric but has now evolved into what a recent theological book has called "Saving Desire." The gap between human desire and spirituality had created a terrible split in the human conscience and this book and others like it may help to heal that split.

I had to read this book with more than my mind - without being present with my heart I would have only been able to partially receive the wisdom of this book. If you want a heartfelt relationship that is more satisfying than anything to date and your willing to give up some preconceived ideas about love, desire and human relationships then consider buying this book. There is a door to experiencing love in unimaginable way and this book helped me open it!

If you don't know this author, this is a great book to start with. It is very deep, yet relatively easy to understand. It is both esoteric and practical. I recommend it highly.
