You’re nothing but a gutter trollop as common as they come. I’ve paid for you and, if you please me, I’ll come back for more on my return.
Those words, spoken by a vile, abusive man, who visits a photographer and his women, are aimed at young Maude.
After her mama dies, and her step-father sends her to Hicklin to pose for his photos in various outfits, Maude takes advantage of the position by learning photography and doing Hicklin's books.
She wants more for her life, including marriage to handsome surgeon Arthur Munk. Fascinated by the Victorian freak shows, she wants to learn more about the human body.
Arthur, teaching her dark skills, gives her back some of her power.
Initially channelling Dickens and the archetype of the fallen woman, it soon switched gear into gruesome body horror and a sort of morality tale against female abuse.
Well written and very grim.
