Reading this book was a beautiful, nostalgic experience.

Beautiful in its story; the plot and the characters were wonderfully explored and developed to tell a heartwarming story of love, individual strength and acceptance of one another's differences.

And nostalgic in that it reminded me of my days reading and writing on Wattpad; the structure, the style and the development of this story was a strong reminder of my own writing style on Wattpad, as well as the style of other books I would read on the site. In this way, it made the story feel all the more real – I felt like I knew Sophie Jackson, her hours behind the keyboard to write her story, her thought processes throughout each chapter, and the agony of putting such a story together. It felt like a real story written by a real person, and I loved that I got this sense of connection with the author when reading her book.

Another great thing about A Pound of Flesh was that it was, undeniably, an entertaining read. It was dramatic, exaggerated at many times, a little ridiculous at some points too, but it all added together to form a story that was so incredibly entertaining that I didn't want to put it down. The fact that it starts off in a prison – very much so appealing to my Orange is the New Black obsession (which, admittedly, I have neglected this week because I was obsessed with reading this book) – then moves onto the sticky situation of a student/teacher relationship, and then the family dramas behind closed doors, and then the big finale and happy ending, all together gave this story substance, diversity, and a huge A+ for its entertainment factor.

I have just finished this book no more then 10 minutes ago and I'm still dabbling at my eyes with a tissue. This book overpowered me with such intense emotions. I felt everything the characters in the book were. Love, loss, conflict, belonging were just a few of the emotions I felt along the journey of reading this book. I was amazed how the writing and just all around loved the characters in the book. Even though most of them I wanted to punch in their judgemental faces....but any who, I did really, really enjoy this book. The character Max was the one that made the tears flow for me at the end my heart broke for him. And then the end with Carter and Kat I was crying again but this time happy tears. Emotional from sadness one chapter, 2 chapters later emotional from love! It was insane! Can't wait for Max's book next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet Carter... 10 June 2015

Katherine Lane’s life was changed on a cold New York street when she was just nine years old. Her father was brutally murdered right in front of her and it was on that day that she vowed to keep his memory alive by helping others.

Taking a job teaching in a prison is a far cry from what her overprotective mother ever wanted for her daughter. But Kat knows that this is where she can make a difference in someone’s life. And she never though she would meet anyone like Wesley James Carter.

Carter is far from your typical resident at Arthur Kill. He’s highly educated, well spoken and disturbingly gorgeous. There is an instant spark between him and the fiery Ms. Lane. So when she offers to continue to tutor him as a condition of his parole, he more than welcomes the chance to finally get her alone.

The attraction between them proves impossible ignore and being together puts them both in harm’s way. They can try to hold the world at bay and overcome any obstacle in their path. But when greed and deceit come looking for them – they can only hide away for so long.

Now THIS is an epic romance! Sophie Jackson has masterfully created the perfect hero in Wesley Carter. Yes, he’s gorgeous and mysterious. But he’s also so openly honest and real that you can’t help but fall utterly and completely in love with him.

With a powerful story and equally powerful characters, A Pound of Flesh is a phenomenon that you won’t want to miss…

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 16 June 2015

Great book! Finally a book with such an interesting story that it sucks you in and you stay up all night and you feverishly pass the pages because you want to find out what happens. This book has no suspense but you want to know what Carter did, what Kat said, how they will progress in their love. I was afraid for Carter, and his anger issues; afraid for Kat and all the pressure she received from her mother and friends. I was scared of the devious transactions being made against Carter, afraid he would be broken again. And finally I was awed by the power of love between two individuals that literally moved mountains. There is an itty bitty detail at the end where I would not have been as forgiving but hey, I didn't write the book.

All in all, an enthralling book about a prison inmate and the teacher who gave him back his life. Totally recommend!
5.0 out of 5 stars Healing the Heart 15 June 2015

There is always something intriguing about a storyline with an aggressive man who never cared about conforming to the rules of society but would do anything to be able to touch the one woman who has a hold of his heart and a woman who is free but is prisoner to the tragedy of her past.
What I loved about this story is how passionately it was written. This love story is more than a traditional romance. The slow burn of their desire isn't rushed and can be felt on every page. The intimacy of their relationship builds with every word they share, every glance they take, every touch they dare to steal and it's all as sexy as you'd think it would be.

The scenes are crafted with so much detail they give the reader a full spectrum of the depth of raw emotion that drove these characters to this point in their lives and whether they will break or mend.
It's one of those stories I couldn't wait to get back to, but didn't want to finish too fast. Author Sophie Jackson has captured my attention and I'm looking forward to the next release in the series.

Personal note: Love the original cover

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!! 11 June 2015

Kat made a promise to her father on the night he was murdered to give back and help others. She takes a job teaching English Lit at a prison to face her fears. She loves her job and helping her students. Wes Carter is doing time for cocaine possession. He's cocky and arrogant, and when he enters Kat's class, she immediately notices him and his bad attitude. Carter is a good man but hasn't made the best decisions. Kat is the type of person that can see past his mistakes and see what kind of man he really is. Their attraction to each other is forbidden but sometimes you just can't help who you fall in love with.

I really loved this book. Kat and Carter had amazing chemistry and I loved the sexual tension between them. Wesley Carter is amazing. I'm normally not a fan of 3rd person and it was hard for me to get into this at first but then I wasn't able to put it down. The writing was really beautiful, especially the intimate scenes (which were super hot.) I really enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance! I'm adding this to my top books of 2015.
4.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Brilliant 10 November 2015

Sometimes it is harder to express yourself when you love a book to one you can pick apart. I've read this a few times now and am still struggling with the words to portray how I felt about it. The use of fate/destiny and soul mates within the narrative literally blew me away and made squishy things happen to my heart.

Told in third person narrative there is a lot of information to take in within the plot, although I have a preference towards first person narrative I can honestly say I don't think I noticed in A Pound of Flesh because the story hooked me so much.

Kat is an inspirational character, her compassion endears to people. SHe may have a privileged life but it has not made her spoiled in any way, she believes in giving back and rehabilitation. Witnessing her fathers violet murder at the hands of street thugs when she was very young has left her with a form of PTSD yet she still finds the strength to confront her inner fears and help offenders channel themselves into something positive.

I completely adored Wes and who wonderfully complex he was as a character, the more you learn about him the harder you fall ♥ Still waters run deep has nothing on Wes. Dealing with his own issues stemming from lack of affection as a child you can't help but want to mother him.

I completely loved the use of literature and the discussions Kat and Wes have on literacy. Beautiful and insightful Sophie links classic text and poetry to current events and contemporary situations - GENIUS.

A Pound of Flesh is utterly brilliant and a firm comfort for me.
