This book is for anyone who has ever learned or wanted to learn a language. In this book I describe how I took myself from being a monolingual 18-year-old to a polyglot who comfortably uses multiple languages every day. This book is far from a scholarly or academic work on learning or memory—although my research into memory and the workings of the human brain have colored almost every page—but rather set of reflections, principles, methods, and techniques which will help you become a more efficient student of language. The overarching message is simple: you can learn any language with ease and speed as long as you have the right attitude, a good plan, and some decent books and materials. Learning a language not only forces you to acquire important transferable skills such as discipline, drive, focus, and long-term planning, but it also—and more importantly—makes you and your life much more interesting and exciting!
