Conservative Christianity has not done very well in dealing with mental illnesses. It seems to be that mental illness has either been considered a spiritual problem, or even a demonic problem. Sometimes, Christians are like the ancient Job's friends and blame the victim. The fact is, sometimes mental health issues are clinical.
Dr. Bakss is a Baptist pastor in Australia whose wife, Jenny, was diagnosed as bipolar in 1993. They wrote this book together recounting their journey and seeking to repel some of the misunderstanding that has stigmatized mental illness, but especially, attempting to give hope to others who are enduring the same afflictions. They have succeeded.
This book has been a tremendous help to me. I started developing some questions about mental illness not too long ago. I have found much enlightenment through the research and experiences of this couple. This book will be helpful to those interacting with individuals who have been diagnosed as Bipolar, but also with depression or even those who are circumstantially discouraged (probably other clinical mental health issues as well). The book will also be an encouragement to those who are actually enduring mental illness.
Primarily, I appreciated the balance of the authors. They uphold the absolute and ultimate authority of the Scriptures. Yet, they are not afraid to advocate for synthetic medicine, hospitalization, and therapy, still they filter everything through the Bible. For example, they point out various examples of people in the Bible who were struggling with mental illness, they acknowledge the use of medicine (even synthetic) in the Bible, they recognize the utilization of medical professionals in the Bible. They recognize that medicine is helpful in balancing chemical issues, that therapy is helpful in coping, and that hope is found in God.
Overall, their trust in the sovereignty and the goodness of God is evident.
If you go to Amazon, you can get this book as an e-book ($9.99) or a paper back ($12.99); there is also a sampling of the book which shows the table of contents.
I highly recommend this book.

Incredibly inspiring and motivational - Poles Apart not only helps to remove the stigma of mental illness in our churches and society, it serves as an amazing witness and testimony for anyone with or without a mental illness. Thank you Robert and Jenny for opening the door of your life to the world by sharing your story and demonstrating your faith in God in a real, authentic and practical way. This book will definitely serve as an exceptional tool in my own practice and is a valuable resource within the mental health profession. Barbara Wojtas, Adv.Dip.Couns., MACA Counsellor and Family Therapist Poles Apart by Dr Robert and Jenny Bakss provides an intimate glimpse into the reality of living with bipolar disorder; both from the perspective of the person with the condition and those sharing life with them. It perfectly captures the essence and dynamic of this multifaceted and often misunderstood illness, whilst dispelling myths and clarifying common misconceptions. The straightforward language ensures that even those without a medical background will be able to gain insight into the condition's complexity and the inherent dangers of failing to comply with a multi-disciplinary management strategy. As a natural health practitioner, I all too frequently meet people in search of a 'natural alternative', and emotions often run high when I attempt to explain the dangers of replacing a neurotransmitter modulating drug with herbal supplements. Only through increased awareness will misconceptions about acceptable treatment options be elucidated, and I believe 'Poles Apart' will play a fundamental role in this regard. I know this book will be a blessing to many and I wish Robert and Jenny all the best with their ongoing journey. Dr Liza Pretorius DHM (UJ) Natural Health Practitioner, Johannesburg, South Africa With courage, empathy, and clarity, Robert and Jenny have eloquently shared their experience with bipolar disorder. While some have denied it and others have demonized it, Robert and Jenny have humbly brought mental illness into the light. They strike a marvellous balance detailing the profound struggles mental illness presents without excusing the many temptations mental illness brings. Although the book is not intended to be a medical resource, the reader will nonetheless find himself much better educated on the topic of bipolar affective disorder by the time he devours its pages. Perhaps most compelling of all is the steady theme of God's grace and goodness throughout each chapter. Truly the Lord has been faithful to strengthen, sustain, and now use as spokesmen this dear couple in the too often silent world of mental illness. Each of us knows someone who will benefit tremendously from this book. In some cases, it can literally be a life saver. It was my benefit to read it and my honour to recommend it now to you. Pastor Kurt Skelly Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, USA Thank you Dr. Robert and Jenny Bakss for your transparency in this powerful book, Poles Apart. In this book, Robert and Jenny Bakss describe the effects of bipolar disorder and use God's Word to help us better understand it. This book is very informative and will be helpful to those who have a desire to offer hope to anyone who suffers with bipolar disorder. Robert and Jenny have done an amazing job in telling their story and I can truly attest from their witness that Christ offers profound healing and hope for those wrestling with bipolar disorder.
