The reader has the scales dropped from their eyes and the author offers us the thought that - at the end - so did Carr. An immensely satisfying book. The interweaving of fiction and history doesn't get much better.

The story doesn't even get going until well over two hundred pages in, and even then it hardly qualifies as thrilling. The dialogue is anachronistic, the characterisation vague and two-dimensional, and the writing is often confusing - sudden shifts in location, in who is speaking, names introduced with little explanation. I knew the basic facts and I still found myself lost at times. I'm sorry to say that I cannot recommend this; if you are interested in the historical case which inspired this novel, I can only urge you to pick up Anne Somerset's Unnatural Murder instead - that's a far more entertaining read.
