Kadence Kavanagh has spent the last two years trying to rebuild her life. When a job opportunity presents itself, she can’t say no, even if it’s with the man who’s life was ruined by her father’s indiscretion. It’s been years since she last saw Caleb Callahan, and she’s not even sure he remembers her, but she’s determined to give herself a clean slate no matter who she has to work for.

In the unlikeliest of circumstances, Caleb becomes her savior – if somewhat reluctantly - and she discovers that the man she’s read about in the gossip columns is nothing more than a smoke screen. Kadence knows that keeping her distance is for the best, no matter how difficult, but when Caleb proposes the unthinkable, she finds herself caught between what’s real, and what she wishes was real.

Caleb and Kadence lose themselves in a lie, and when reality comes knocking, they realize that all they were doing was playing pretend…

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest Review 3 February 2016
By Romance Readers Retreat - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
It gets harder and harder to find a completely original book, when you've read as many as I have and inevitably there's sometimes a ring of familiarity to books when there are so many in a sub-genre - though nothing sinister is intended.
Despite this book having that familiar feel, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Celeb is a great character! He's hot, temperamental and with definitive alpha qualities - who doesn't love that growl that rumbles in a man's chest?!

I flitted between admiring Kadence's strength and determination and wanting the slap some sense into her!
If ever there was a case for seeing what's right in front of you and plowing through the bull, it's the pseudo relationship between these two!

With so many outside influences and history rearing its ugly head, love just doesn't stand a chance.

This is the first time I've read anything by Tamsyn Bester and I've got to say that it was really well written. I laughed, welled up a bit and wanted to scratch a couple of eyes out!
It draws you in and before I knew it, I'd read this delightful tale in a day.

If you're looking for a quick, easy read that'll get the butterflies in your tummy fluttering, then give this book a go - it'll be worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Caleb...yes 3 February 2016

Playing Pretend by Tamsyn Bester was one fan-freaking-tastic read. I have to say that this woman knows how to keep her readers on their toes. I know I am not the only one of her readers who gets so excited when she has a new release. I have been a fan of her writing ever since I read her first book and I must say every single time I realize just how well her writing has perfected, not to say that her other books weren’t good. But I can definitely see the maturity in her writing and my heart swells with pride when I see how perfect the outcome of her story. I enjoyed to hell out of Caleb and Kandence. He was such a a**wad and I loved it, also his intensity is on a different level, you can feel the tension coming off of him and all you’re doing is reading the book. I love Kadence, she gave Caleb a run for his money and it was wonderful to watch. Then we have some very well written hot as hell sex scene, they were hotter than fifty fire side. And then we have the ultimate twist in the story, I mean I knew that something major happened back then but I never thought that the reveal was such as juicy topic. I couldn’t put down this book; I started to read around eight the night before and couldn’t put it down. Tamsyn will grab your attention and you no other choice but to not out it down, you will have a book hangover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 2 February 2016
By Diane Plourde - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Reading a book is even better than watching TV because it's like a movie that plays for hours in my mind. I get to ride a roller coaster of emotions. Tamsyn Bester is a perfect exemple of an author who keeps me passionate about reading. Once in a while an author will come along and embark me on an amazing journey of a great story with awesome characters. I take great pride in writing my reviews that will reflect the amazingness of a story that was shared with me. The ARC of Playing Pretend by Tamsyn Bester was given to me in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review. For the shear fact that I missed quite a bit of sleep and omitted watching Chicago Fire ( LOL), I don't think 5 stars is enough to give to this story.

I won't go into much details about what this story is about, because there are so many surprising twists and turns that I'll ruined the other readers pleasure of experiencing this adventure.

Kadence and Caleb go way back, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they have not seen each other in over 5 years. She goes to work for Caleb's company in hope that he doesn't recognize her. It's what unfolds next that kept me on the edge of my seat while reading endlessly. Kadence will be made an offer by Playing Pretend , but after a while she doesn't know what's real or what's not.
I didn't really like Caleb very much at first because we was arrogant, cocky, manipulative and even mean at times. He's hot and cold all at once. But as the story unfolds I got a glimpse of what's underneath all that attitude. He's protective, overbearing, alpha to a fault. Since it's mostly told by Kadence's POV, it's later that I got to feel for Caleb.
Kadence as been down on her luck in the past couple years but has pulled through enough to land her dream job. Luck is still not on her side, but she holds her head high and does what she needs to do in order to survive. I loved this characters very much because she's strong, independent with an heart of gold. She endures more heartache than anyone should at that age but knows that life is what you make of it. I rooted for her, envied her determination, loved her stubbornness and cried not only with her but for her. She doesn't victimize herself. When Caleb pushes her, but she will push right back.

It's beautifully worded with a seamless plot and amazing storyline. Tamsyn gets to the point without dragging anything out. The story always goes somewhere without having the feeling of being stuck at the same place. There's always new developments that keeps this story entertaining and captivating. The sequence of events flow flawlessly. I literally devoured this story in a matter of hours. Trust me, it's that good. There was never a dull moment. There are so many twist and turns happening that my head was spinning. The storyline, the characters and the words were created to perfection that came from a creative mind. Some parts of the story made me sad, some made me so mad that I wanted to throw my kindle out the window ( or at Caleb's head. Lol). But above all these emotions, at the end I was smiling. I just can't give enough praise for this story and the author.

So if your looking for a romance with angst that is a standalone, with a storyline so entertaining , amazing characters and that will leave you with a huge smile on your face, well this is the book for you. Told in Kadence's POV with a few from Caleb at the end. I strongly recommend reading this book. I've read a few from Tamsyn and they were all worth your precious time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this journey between Caleb & Kadence 3 February 2016
By Mignon Mykel - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I really, really enjoyed the journey that Caleb and Kadence embark upon in Playing Pretend. After separating herself from her family, and a relationship gone wrong, Kadence finds herself accepting a position at the company Caleb is CEO of -- and is convinced the man doesn't remember her. Five years ago, she had her first kiss with the man 8-years her senior and regardless of the family strife between the Kavanaghs and Callahans, she still finds herself nervous around him.

Told primarily in Kadence's point of view, we see her nervous and fumbling at times (more so when she doubts herself, something we see a few times from beginning to end), but we also see what a strong, independent woman she is. She can hold her own when the time calls for it and she doesn't take crap from catty women. Her fierce independence does get her into trouble a time or two though, and it's that same independence that opens up the new world of Caleb Callahan to her.

He's not the same man as he was when she was seventeen. He holds himself harder, he doesn't talk about himself, is a cold, sarcastic bastard, and is a determined business man. It was partially the familial issues that made him that way, but Kadence learns throughout, just what an amazing man Caleb has truly grown into.

I was extremely frustrated with Caleb at times, but as his story opened up through Kadence's eyes, he became much more lovable, more rounded, and more of that protective alpha I love to read about. We do get Caleb's point of view, but not until the last 2 chapters and epilogue, and with it we get to see some of the earlier scenes through his view point, in retrospect, helping the reader learn who he truly is, and his motivations. The epilogue(s) are told in his view point, too; in my opinion, this was a great way to write this story. I like dual point of views, but sometimes you need to see it all in one person's eyes to get a full feel of the story, and I felt that this was a positive example of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!! - C.L Masonite's Book Blog 12 February 2016
By C.L Masonite - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
First and foremost, this book was AMAZING !! It’s going in the vault A.K.A my “all time favourite list” on my kindle.

It was an emotional rollercoaster, Tamsyn had me feeling all the highs and emotional lows of love.

I’ll use two songs to demonstrate this:

Breakeven by the Script and this single line of lyrics: “What am I supposed to do when the best part of me was always you?

2. Truly Madly Deeply by Cascada - "I want to stand with you on a mountain, I want to bathe with you in the sea.I want to lay like this forever, Until the sky falls down on me"

One minute I was devastated by heartbreak, the next I was floating on cloud nine!!

NOW back to business:

Kadence Kavanagh comes head to head with someone in her past - the panty/jaw/mouth droppingly HOT Caleb Callahan, the CEO of Callahan Industries.

Is your interest piqued yet?? If not read on my list of reasons as to why this is a MUST read:

1. Kadence is torn between crossing a line that once crossed cannot be uncrossed, what is said cannot be unsaid - and the source of her dilemma is none other than Caleb Callahan.

2. Caleb hides a secret that I never saw coming and neither will you.

3. Kadence's past is forever haunting her- why does she hide from it? And how does she react when she is confronted by it? Does it threaten to blow her relationship/tryst/affair with Caleb to shreds?

4. The sex scenes are insanely HOT

5. And did I mention the drama??
