I love that we still get to see characters from the first book, and had a few new ones introduced as well.
Looking forward to the next book in the series on Jimmy and Lena, and to see what happens to them all next.
Play can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the whole series. You will not be disappointed.
In one day, Anne Rollins goes from crappy to happy when she meets Malcolm Ericson at a party hosted by David and Evelyn (we know their story from Lick - book #1). Anne’s flatmate moves out, unannounced with debts unpaid, leaving her high and dry. So when her neighbour ‘strongly suggests’ that she attend Ev’s (her ex-neighbour) party, she figures she’ll leave the newly exposed dust bunnies to their own devices in exchange for free beer and pizza.
Bumping into Malcolm is a dream come true. Yeah, she was one of those teenagers who liked wallpaper – the rock band poster kind. Malcolm has been a star in many of her dreams. Thankfully he ignores her crazy fan-girl moment and actually wants to get to know her.
In fact, he wants to help her, in exchange for her pretending to be his girlfriend. She doesn’t really get to agree of refuse because he just insinuates himself into her life, making for many fun-filled pages of manic Mal nonsense.
This book is actually quite heartfelt. Anne has a bad habit of giving too much and having her ‘friends’ take advantage of her. The moment they meet Mal cuts to the core and starts clearing out Anne’s baggage. Mal is a sweetheart with the best of intentions. What he doesn’t bargain for is Anne burrowing into his life and heart in return.
This couple are made for each other. I love their volleyed banter and their giant, people-pleasing hearts. This book is entertainment at its finest.
5 stars! Go get your copy. Seriously.
I read this in one night, I never would have been able to put it down, it was that good.
I think a lot of Stage Dive Series fans were putting a lot of pressure on this being beyond Awesome and having Kylie Scott step up and pretty much shouting Challenge Accepted, and freaking NAILED IT!!!! She did an amazing job and put out and an even more incredible story full of heartbreak, Love, and all the little issues that make it even more enjoyable. I love how Kylie smashes you in the brain with some sadness and great story plot.
Mal is the Hilarious Drummer of Stage Dive and one of the best characters ever written. He is sensitive and manly and uses humour to hide some scary feelings. I absolutely love Mal he has the funniest lines. I completely love his personality and his relationship with Anne is wonderful.
Anne is a bit of a pushover and many can relate to her. I loved her originality as a character. She overcomes some serious obstacles, and goes to prove what you want isn't always what you get and its way way better. I think the Pumpkin nickname is awesome and wholey appropriate to Anne and a representation of Mal's personality.
As a couple the connect straight away even when they aren't exactly together and suit each other perfectly. I loved that they both had serious obstacles to overcome and helped each other grow and evolve.
I loved the cameos of the rest of the band especially David and Ev and more Ben was great (I look forward to his story and Jimmy's), I think the boys played a bigger part in this instalment, than David's book.
All up a story of perfection, some laugh out loud lines some Hot sexy scenes and an array of awesome characters, I cannot wait for Jimmy's story next I think its going to be another mind blowing experience.
Now just have to wait for the Paperback release!!!!!!

And I loved this book! Even more!
Mal was so much more than he promised in Lick!
Mal and Anne meet at a party, Mal decided he liked Anne, and that he needs Anne (for reasons of his own) and Anne needs him. So he moves in and convinced Anne to be a pretend Girlfriend.
"You moved in with me somehow".......
"I know what you're gonna say, it's sooner than I thought too. But Davie threw me out today so I figured, why wait?"
I just blinked, the rest of me being too frozen to respond.
"Okay. Long story short, I accidently saw Ev naked" He held up both hands protesting his innocence. "It was only side boob, I swear...But you know what he's like with her....Not my fault she was topless. Anyway, Davie went ballistic.....Harsh words were said. We may have even wrestled slightly. But I forgive him. Love makes you psycho, right?"
"So you moved in with me?"
"Anne, come on. We talked about this last night. If you were gonna have a problem with me moving in, that was the time to bring it up, not now."
And that sets the tone for the book! Mal is a beautifully written character! His humour, his playful nature, his childlike vulnerability that comes through sometimes, his manic energy - all hiding something, a pain you occasionally get glimpses of!
And Anne was a great character too. She saw down to the real Mal, behind the famous drummer.
Together they were perfection, the chemistry, the banter between them was great.
And seeing more of the rest of the band, and how close they all are and support each other was beautiful!
It was a funny, sexy, at times a little sad, buy hugely enjoyable read, that somehow manages to pass the brilliance of book one!
Play was really well written and Kylie's writing makes you believe you know her characters intimately and you curse the gods for not having them be real flesh and blood. I guarantee you will laugh, cry, and need to wipe the steam off the mirrors when you sit down and read this book. If you aren't able to read then the audiobook is amazing to listen to! Check out your options because it is worth the book-ation. 100% recommend.
Both my digital copies of Lick and Play are highlighted to within an inch of their lives! Kylie manages to get the perfect balance of sentimental and laugh out loud moments. There are plenty of those in this book!! Mal is hilarious - A wicked sense of humour!
He's also quite sensitive and I think that was obvious even in the first book. These guys are a family not just a band, they care for each other. I think that became even more obvious in this story but I do wish that Mal had opened up and become a bit more serious with Anne a little earlier on in the story. Only because once he did, it ended too quickly.
Having said that I completely understand why he closed up and used humour to avoid the situation he is hiding.
We also get to see a bit more Of David and Ev in this story - they are secondary characters now but I always wanted a bit more so anything I can get, I'll take!
Kylie has set up such a good series here with the rest of the bands stories still to come. She's given us 4 rockers who are actually quite different in their own ways, which makes their stories all that bit more mysterious. I can not wait for Jimmy and Ben's stories.
Mal is the drummer of successful band, Stage Dive. He’s known as the happy, jokey one, who’s the peacemaker. However, his friends have been worried about him, as he’s not been himself and his recent behaviour is not normal. He comes across the a happy-go-lucky guy but he's more complicated than that.
Anne is a fixer. Her flatmate has just done a runner, leaving her with an apartment that she can’t pay for on her own, as well as still owing her money. She works in a bookshop with her friend, Reece, who she’s had a crush on for a couple of years but never looked twice at her. Her younger sister is in college and she’s looked after her ever since their mother checked out, when their father abandoned them. So, yeah, she has her issues.
One night, Anne and Mal meet at a party, and the next thing she knows, he’s moved in with her and asking her to be his pretend girlfriend.
This was a great story. Mal is such a joker – to the point that he was even winding me up!! Anne is completely steamrolled by him and his personality. She’s knows he’s got some other agenda going on but he refuses to talk about it. What starts out as a platonic arrangement turns into something more. The lines become blurred and, against her volition, Anne puts her heart on the line. As the story progresses, Anne’s past and Mal’s secret are revealed.
The chemistry between them is fantastic. Told from Anne’s POV, we see her becoming stronger – less of a doormat – and being able to set boundaries of what is acceptable and not. I loved how much Mal cared for her and needed her in his life. Really loving this series and about to start the next book.
After reading Lick, i have been waiting for a spare moment in my blog tour schedule to read this book, i let me say i was not disappointed. I loved Mal in the first book, and he had me laughing out loud with his playful ways, witty banter and his chats with Anne's pussy! this book made me laughed so hard.
I have got to say rock star books are one of my favs, but Kylie Scott has a way with her writing that makes them fresh and exciting.
Mal and Anne are not what you would call a normal couple. Mal is manic and unpredictable, but not in a nasty way you have just got to love him. He is like an over active child at times but he has a heart of gold. Anne is the dependable best friend, unbeknown to herself she is willing to be the door mat in her friendships, that is until Mal points it out. Anne an Mal are complete opposites, which is exactly why their interactions so entertaining but work so very well.
At some points of this book when he was hurting i wanted to hug Mal so hard, Kylie really makes you feel the emotion the characters are going through.
All the secondary characters are great throughout, and bring another layer to the story.
Mal and Anne's sexy sweet story swept me off my feet, and im in love with every band member, i literally cannot wait for the further band mates books, yes im a book whore i love to change my book boyfriends.
Yet another 5 sexy stars for Kylie Scott.
I consumed this book in one sitting and fell in love all over again with not just Mal, but Anne too. The relationship between Mal and Anne was witty, sexy and fun....who wouldn't want to go home one day and find your teenage heartthrob moved into your apartment??? The texting, "Anne we have to talk", the broken bed and Killer were some of my favourite bits....my kindle is literally a mass of highlights as I laughed and smirked my way through. There were a few moments of tension with Reece and real heart-string pull for both Mal and Anne when they have to confront and come to terms/acceptance of issues they are both carrying. But, there is a HEA *sigh* and it was also great to catch up with Dave & Ev and the other band members!
I adore this series and cannot wait for Jimmy's story in June - fab read...highly recommend!
Mal is a machine, both behind the drums and with the ladies – living by his own rules – the world is yet to come to terms with Mal – the other guys love him and the ladies definitely love him but there is something underneath it all that screams of wanting more. Wanting something he doesn’t have, wanting normal!!
Mal has a complete disregard for convention – he has no desire to bend his will to accommodate normal convention – until Anne. And even then she doesn’t stand a chance when trying to figure out exactly how he has managed to ensconce himself in her life so quickly and so fully.
One things she is sure of because he states it quite clearly – he is always honest and when Anne broaches the subject his response is just down right beautiful.. No matter their start – he has his forever.
“Mal, I can barely tell when you’re being serious as it is.” He rolled onto his hands and knees, then crawled over to me, eyes full of mischief. “If I’m talking to you, I’m serious.”
We were introduced to Anne in the first novel – she was the roommate of Eve. A studious hard working, normal singleton who can’t seem to catch a break despite being one of the good girls! Eager to please and always happy to help – Anne has always put everyone else first and while attending a party with her friends, Mal overhears he on the phone and makes his opinions clear. Not that she takes that very well but having been his biggest fan she is more than a little star struck.
I actually thought that Mal had a little ADHD the way he acts, he is sort of manic but he is controlled – and I don’t think we get a true reflection of him until later in the story.
Deciding that he is the man to help her with her problems – Mal takes the unusual step of moving himself into Anne’s apartment – without telling her first … surprisingly she didn’t go bat-s*** crazy and kick him out and so…..from there the story unfolded.
Starting out as a fake relationship (don’t they always) the two of them settle into a crazy sort of normal that just fits them beautifully. Mal and Anne are a conundrum that defies logic but on the other hand makes perfect sense. Anne falls hard but Mal fell long before her – Ahhhhhhh!!
“Life’s a Song, Anne. Let’s play”
The banter and rhetoric between not only Mal and Anne but the supporting characters in the book is just fabulous and there are too many stand out quotes to mention.
But by the end of the story it had me wishing that I could just spend a little longer inside the head and head of this delightfully deranged but ultimately divine man
I love this series by Kylie Scott but as much as I loved Mal's playfulness and Anne's contrasting personality, this story fell a little short for me. It was easy to read and enjoyable but not enough storyline for me, personally, to get my teeth into.
It was well written and flowed but I would have liked more detail about Mal's emotional state and why he appeared manic on so many occasions. The reasons in part became clear at the end of the book but this story could have delved more into living with someone suffering from bipolar, if in deed that was where the author was leading to to believe Mal was suffering from.
The book sucked me in right from the beginning though and I loved the relationship which developed between Mal and Anne even though it was unbelievable. I mean, who would let a stranger just move into their apartment after meeting him the night before. I know, I know, this is book land but hey, sometimes I need a reality check.
This was a lighthearted read and Mal's character was extremely funny and sweet although infuriating at times. I love the way this band gel together and support each other through their problems and I can't wait to read more about this amazing group of friends.
The book is hard to summarise without giving too much away but essentially it is a boy meets girl, falls in love, HEA read with an added twist making Mal's character lovably insecure.
My favourite quote has to be:
"If you don't stop talking to my vagina I'm going to kill you."

Mal is the drummer of the band. He is the life and soul of the party, the joker, the peacekeeper. He is charming, naughty and loveable. The all round nice guy but with an eye for the ladies.
Anne Rollins is a twenty-something who has hit a bad patch due to her deadbeat room-mate running out on her and leaving her financially high and dry. She is reliable, dependable and in need of her life being turned on it's head.
Anne meets Mal, sparks fly and neither of them will ever be the same.
They are different people but they make each other better. They don't fall into insta-love but they are instantly attracted.
It is funny, sweet, sexy and the goings on with Mal's mum are heartbreaking but easily guessable.
It is a story that grabs your attention from the beginning and wont let you go until you have finished it with a big smile on your face.
Kylie Scott writes rockstars the way they should be written. The books are full of emotion, sensuality and humour they provide a perfect escape for a good few hours reading. I highly recommend them!
You get books that are enjoyable at the time of reading but 2 days later you can't remember a thing about it, and you get books like this that you still remember in detail months later... thats what defines a good book for me.
Other books which revolve around rock stars that i would recommend include, The Lost in Oblivion series, Blue Phoenix series, Gibsons Legacy series, Fallen Star series, Power Station series and the Burke Brothers series.
I love the characters sooo much. All the boys have great different personalities, which I think is hard to find sometimes.
The writing was great. My only criticism was the sex scene. The description was great and really visual but when it came to the actual orgasum I felt like it got lost with no actual bang!! At first I got really annoyed at it but the story lines are so good I over looked it.
Would love to see more passion when a sexual climax is happening
Great story all in all
Cannot wait for Jimmy story, I think iv got a soft spot for him already :D x
