Product Description

The Play is a STANDALONE, CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE comprising of two books in one, totaling 150,000 words.

A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn't play by the rules.
A vivacious man-eater who's given up on love.
When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don't just attract - they explode.

From the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling author of The Pact and The Offer, comes The Play, a standalone spinoff and contemporary romance about taking chances and rescuing hearts.

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram's cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life - tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he's the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan's quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn't until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can't stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.

Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

**The Play features a brooding, hot as sin Scottish rugby player with a soft spot for rescuing dogs. Because of this, preorder and release week funds were collected for animal charities. Over $12,000 was raised and will be distributed over the year. Check out Karina Halle's website for more details.**

NOTE: The Play contains profanity and sexually explicit contact - reader discretion is advised. This is not new adult.

Another gem in this fantastic series. Lachlans life & story was so heartbreaking. He partly made up for it by rehousing abandoned dogs. I liked Kayla the man eater from the previous stories & this showed another side to her. So let me say this is all oh so sad for both of them. The buildup & connection between these two is torturous but so well portrayed.

I just felt like hugging Lachlan & telling him everything will be alright. He was like one big teddy bear. Kayla was a David taking on Goliath. Her story broke my heart too.

This is one very emotional & loving read. I couldn't been more happy for this couple. Brilliant ! What more can I say.

The first half of this book was fantastic so funny and angsty and hot chemistry will they get together or won't they the push and pull was great the second half slowed down a bit for me and I was waiting for the hook but it didn't really come until the end and then it was very emotional with Kayla's mom my god I bawled my eyes out the ending felt a bit rushed but it was super romantic the epilogue was fabulous so 4 emotional stars for this book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 BEASTLY STARS 4 November 2015

One of the most emotional and heartbreakingly beautiful books I’ve read this year. I couldn’t have loved it more!

Anyone that follows my reviews, even half the time, knows what an huge Karina Halle fan I am. I live to read her books and feel she is one of the most diverse and underrated authors in the romance genre. Lachlan appears briefly in The Offer, but you don’t have to read it in order to enjoy The Play. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read about another McGregor man, but right away, it becomes obvious he is quite different from his two cousins. Lachlan is definitely more brooding and darker; he doesn’t earn his nickname “The Beast” without reason. I have adored Kayla since The Pact, and couldn’t wait to explore all the layers underneath the good time and hilarious persona. With their personalities, I just knew this was going to be quite the explosion. The angst is off the charts and some of the sexiest scenes don’t even involve a kiss. He simply calls Kayla “Love” and it is one the best pet names, ever. I was constantly melting with his quite and unassuming sexiness.

~ “I thought I was going to go over the edge.”
~ “I would have gone right with you…”

While Lachlan and Kayla’s relationship moves at a fast pace, it was perfect and believable for these two. It is also not without intensity and tribulations. Lachlan is hiding so much hurt and deep wounds underneath his tough exterior. My heart ached for him constantly. It is easy to see why he is so drawn to abused and discarded animals. The interactions he has with them are some of my favorites from the book. Karina does an excellent job of incorporating a serious and heartbreaking issue into the storyline. As a “mom” to two rescue Boxers, this book is even more personal than usual.

“I know what’s it like to be cast aside, to feel unwanted, to believe you have no one to fight for you. I’ve been there.”

While I will not spoil any details, the book is my worst ugly cry of 2015 thus far. You will simply have to read it to find out why. Despite the tears, I absolutely loved it! Karina has some of her most intense and heartbreaking scenes in the second half of this book. Rest assured though, I was smiling at the end. It was awesome seeing Stephanie/Linden and Bram/Nicola so happy and in love. I am not certain there will be another book from this group, but Brigs definitely needs a story. I’ll be waiting patiently for whatever she writes next.

There are so many things that I loved about this book. It was so great to finally get to know the real Kayla. She's was so much more than the man loving, good time girl. And Lachlan...I absolutely love reading about broken men in my books. I adored watching the two of them navigate through their relationship and with learning to love. Fantastic book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Play, 5+ heartbreaking stars 4 November 2015

Having enjoyed The Pact and The Offer, I was (not so patiently) waiting for the next book in the series. I liked Kayla in the previous books, and I wanted to know more about her and the man she would fall for. Reading the blurb only made me want this book more. And it didn’t disappoint with all the emotions it made me feel.

Lachlan McGregor didn’t have an easy start in life; being abandoned at the young age of five by his mother at an orphanage has left a huge mark on him. Troubled and scarred by his past, he tumbled in an even deeper pit during his teenage years. Luckily, with the help of his last foster family, the McGregors, he changed his life around for the better and gets a chance at a bright future. Nowadays, Lachlan is a well-known Scottish rugby player; he’s successful on the field and has casual relations with beautiful women. But despite his success, he’s still a quiet, somewhat withdrawn, man who doesn’t let other people in and still fights his demons. Meeting Kayla awakens feelings in him he didn’t think possible.

“I’ve been thinking about her ever since the impromptu rugby match, ever since she left my flat in my clothes, ever since I saw her at the bar. The way she looks at me… it’s not just that she wants me, because I know she does. It’s that… I feel she might see me, too. Beneath the layers.”

Kayla Moore goes through life working, partying, hooking up with strangers, and taking care of her elderly mother. Seeing the deep and meaningful relationships her dearest friends have with their men, makes her feel lonely. Her lifestyle and work don’t satisfy her anymore; swearing off men and casual hookups is easy, however, her problems at work are harder to fix. When she meets Lachlan, she immediately feels attracted to the broody, silent man and falls hard for him.

“He places his beautiful hands on either side of my face, holding me in place, his nostrils flaring as he breathes in hard. It’s as if he’s trying to restrain himself, and I want him to let go and unleash it all on me, everything that he has.”

Lachlan and Kayla dance around each other for a bit, but you can feel the enormous attraction between the couple. They can’t stay away from one another, and together they are wild and explosive. While they connect on a physical level, you can feel Lachlan holding back. He doesn’t want Kayla to know about his past. Kayla has her own issues to deal with; she’s being misunderstood at work and by people in general. Also, the idea of an all-consuming love scares her, seeing how devastated her mother was, and still is, after the death of her father. The couple wants to be together, but their past and experiences tell them otherwise. I have been incredibly happy, almost to the brink of tears, when they finally realized they couldn’t live without each other.

It was good seeing the couples from the previous books, they have Lachlan’s and Kayla’s back and support them where they can. Although I’ve liked The Pact and The Offer, both couples in them made me mad with their actions at times. In this book this doesn’t happen. I’ve felt so much for both Lachlan and Kayla. Especially Lachlan, who had to go through so much, deserves a woman who loves him with all her heart and nothing less. I love the realness in this book; the struggles and concerns they to endure

“I give myself to her, to feeling the warmth, the ferocity of her kiss. It brings me back to a beautiful world, one I never thought I’d live in again. I bury my hands in her hair, holding her head, feeling her as our mouths move sweetly against each other in a slow, intoxicating hunger. I can’t believe I’m kissing her again, touching her again, feeling her again.”

I love The Play, plain and simple. It’s written in the beautiful style Karina Halle is known for. I give this heartbreaking story 5+ stars.

"...and suddenly there are no thoughts. No pain. No nothing and yet everything. That feeling of falling, of realizing how good it can f***ing be when you actually care about someone."

This story is beyond words...The connection Lachlan and Kayla have is beautiful, emotional, intense and above all, palpable! The feels just OOZE off of the pages but in the best way... These two almost immediately see passed each other's walls and deflections and it's such beautiful thing! And to witness them come to terms with the way they feel is simply amazing!

The prologue immediately gripped my attention. It was extremely emotional and completely unexpected. But what I felt was truly genius was the way she immediately jumped into a bit of comic relief directly after, in chapter one. It was fluid and genuine and lightened up the mood in the best way.

Karina Halle will always be a one click author got me... It doesn't matter if the woman is writing dark romance or contemporary, she has a way of providing the most realisitc type of characters that you can't help but fall head over heels for. Lachlan & Kayla will forever own a piece of my heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scottish Rugby player...out spoken quirky woman....Dirty talk sexiness....heartbreak and Best yet from Karina Halle 9 November 2015
By Jeanine Levy - Published on Amazon.com

I just have to say....I am so sleepy today cause I couldn't put down The Play. I think this is the best yet from Karina Halle. Kayla Moore is the 5th wheel in her group of friends but she never shows if it bothers her or not. They all see her as the fun loving quirky girl who doesn't seem to settle down. I absolutely Loved Kayla and how she just kept on being her. I love her quirkiness and how she comes across confident, but has the shyness and self consciousness others do not see. Lachlan McGregor, cousin to Linden and Bram...Star Rugby player in Edinburgh. He comes to visit he cousins in San Fransisco and to recover from and injury. He meets Kayla and he fights his attraction, Kayla tries to turn her charms onto him and he does not fall for them. (at least on the outside) She nicknames him the beast cause he is so big. Lachlan..sigh, the beast! He dark intensity....you can just tell that he is fighting something deep. I love the chemistry...the dirty sexiness. I loved and seriously disliked how gut wrentching it was at times. Read the journey they go through opening up to each other and learning about each other and relationships. Have tissues handy. Gut wrentching, heartbreaking and seriously dirty sexiness in this book. Thank you for such an amazing book Karina Halle!!
